Panthers fall at Chuckey-Doak

Cumberland Gap traveled up to Afton, Tennessee on Friday night October 8th to face the Black Knights of Chuckey-Doak. The Panthers fumbled the opening kickoff but the defense held firm and forced a three and out by the Black Knights.

The Panthers second possession ended with a mishandled punt that the Black Knights recovered at the Cumberland Gap nine yard line. Brasen Murvin took the first handoff into the end zone for the Black Knights touchdown. The two point try was unsuccessful and Chuckey-Doak held an early 6-0 lead.

Both teams swapped three and outs and then turnover on downs. When it all settled out Cumberland Gap had the ball at the Black Knights 44 yard line. Ethan Slusher got loose and ran 44 yards into the end zone. The two point try was no good and we were tied at six which would be our score at the end of the first quarter.

Murvin took the first handoff of the second quarter and ran 68 yards up the middle for another Black Knights score. The extra point try missed and Chuckey-Doak was back up 12-6.

After another Gap turnover on downs Chuckey-Doak put together a short drive that ended Cadin Tullock hit Hayden Anderson from 19 yards out. Tullock connected with Jaylen Willett for the two point try. The Black Knights held a 20-6 lead and that score would remain the same going into the half.

Cumberland Gap recovered a Chuckey-Doak fumble early in the third quarter and put together a long drive of their own that ended when Lance Owens connected with Logan Napier from four yards out. Slusher ran in the two point try and Cumberland Gap had drawn back within six. Our score at the end of the third was Cumberland Gap – 14 and Chuckey-Doak – 20.

Murvin found the end zone from four yards out and he also carried in the two point try early in the fourth. Chuckey-Doak had pushed the lead back out and were leading 28-14.

Slusher found the end zone again himself from three yards out. Owens carried in the two point try and with 5:08 left in the game the Panthers were trailing 22-28.

Cumberland Gap found a bit of life late as Slusher recovered a Black Knights fumble at the goal line and returned it back out to the 11 with 2:31 left on the clock. Owens connected with Brayden Painter on a short pass and then on the next play the Panthers lost the ball on a fumble.

Chuckey-Doak took a few knees and escaped with a muddy win 28-22
