Claiborne wins two of three against Union County

Union County made the trip north to battle Claiborne High School in three games of basketball, November 30. Up first were the junior varsity boys and for three periods, the two teams swapped the lead. It wasn’t until the final period that Claiborne extended the lead out to 11 points. The final score was 58-37 with the Bulldogs getting the win. Leading CHS in scoring was Brady Hamlin with 16, Josh Bolton had 13, Jacob Smith dropped in nine, Vincent Bolden had seven, CJ Cox had six. Ethan Short had four and Hunter Green had three. Leading Union County was Parks with 10.

The second game of three featured the varsity girls. Claiborne started with a 12-2 run and finished the opening period leading 12-10. During the second period, Claiborne knew they were in a battle as the Lady Patriots tied it at 13. At the half, CHS led 21-20. After the Claiborne High School dance team performed during the break the Lady Bulldogs took a nine-point lead at 29-20. Claiborne led by 10 after three, 39-29. Claiborne then found a few three-pointers and finished the game with a win at 60-36. Leading the Lady Bulldogs in scoring was Allie Jones with 16, Taylor Pressnell had 13, Hannah Fugate had12, Hailey Sexton had eight, Emma Myatt had seven. Ily Bussell and Jordan Fultz both had two points. Union County was led by Kelsey Holt with 15.

The final game was the boys varsity game and it started out with Claiborne getting a lead and finishing the first period leading 11-6. The Patriots tied it at 11 early during the second period but the Bulldogs rolled off four unanswered. Union County stormed back and took the lead 20-19 with just under four minutes left in the half. Claiborne worked hard to get back ahead and led 23-22 at the half. The Claiborne cheer team hit the floor for the halftime entertainment and it was then back to basketball. Union County battled through a technical foul on their coach to pull to within one point at the two-minute mark, 34-33. The fouls got harder and the emotions were high. With a minute left in the third, Claiborne had a five-point lead and the period ended with the Bulldogs leading by two, 40-38. The Patriots tied the game at 40 early in the final period. Claiborne only got one point out of four consecutive trips around the five-minute mark and that allowed the Patriots to lead by five at 48-43. Claiborne then rallied and tied it at 50 with 1:03 remaining. It was down to the wire and Claiborne missed the key shots to tie of take the lead, The final score was 52-53 with the visitors taking the victory. Claiborne was led in scoring by Levi Peoples with 20, Ethan Cupp Had 12, Tyler Myatt had eight, Seth Morelock had six. Three other Bulldogs scored two points each including Zach Bailey, Landen Wilson and George Smith. Union was led by Cole Nease with 13 and Max Richardson with 11.
