SMMS traveled to Midway for four rivalry games of basketball, November 9.
Up first were the junior varsity girls. SMMS used their press to help drop in six points to lead after one period, 6-0. The Lady Red Devils scored their first point during the second and shutout the Lady Blue Devils. At the half SMMS led, 6-1. The second half began with a wrong goal basket by SMMS that made the scoreboard read 6-3. The Lady Blue Devils scored six unanswered to lead 12-3. SMMS kept scoring and by the end of the third period led 16-3. It was much of the same during the final period as the Lady Blue Devils won 22-7. Leading SMMS in scoring was Emma Ferguson with 10, Tayleigh Stansberry with six, Jalynn Brooks with four and Leah Sandefur with 2. Midway was led by Chloe Holt with four, Keylee Shoffner with two and Alyssa Collins with a single point.
The second game was also a JV game with the boys taking the floor. Midway used pressure on defense to get a few easy baskets on offense. The Red Devils went on a 7-0 run before the first period ended. Midway used the same pressure during the second period and finished the half leading 14-0. The Midway defense kept the shutout until 1:40 in the third. SMMS finally got on the board with a layup. The score after three periods was 19-3. SMMS had their best period during the fourth but it wasn’t enough and Midway took the win, 19-10. Leading Midway in scoring was Noah Burke with eight, Truett Tolliver had six, Brady Rosenbalm had three and Bryson Meyers had two. Leading SMMS on the night was Mason Helton with four, Brayden Grimm with three and Eric Ferguson also with three.
Next to take the floor were the varsity girls. Midway dropped the first basket in down low on the block and then added six more to lead 8-0 after one period. With 5:15 showing on the second period clock the Lady Blue Devils hit their first basket. With 3:35 left in the half SMMS was down by only one. With 2:00 left SMMS held a one point lead 10-9. Midway tied it at the line and the half ended knotted up at 10. During the third period, the Lady Blue Devils broke the tie on the free throw line but Midway replied with a basket. The momentum kept shifting between the two teams with SMMS holding a one point lead going into the final period, 15-14. SMMS led by three points with 3:44 left. Midway pulled back to within one point but SMMS hit a layup to extend the score to 19-16. The Lady Red Devils played tough but it was the Lady Blue Devils sealing the 27-20 victory. Leading SMMS was Jossilyn Robbins with 12, Emma Ferguson with 10, CJ Hatfield with four and Carlie Leprade with one point. Leading Midway in scoring was Jadyn Meyers with nine, Layla Arnwine withg four, Sienna Watson had four, Lindsey Posey had two and Chloe Holt had a single point.
The final game was the varsity boys game and it was expected to be a great game between two close teams. SMMS Coach Brandon Parkey talked about his Blue Devils before the game, “They are learning. They have to figure out how to play together and they are getting close. I think a couple more weeks and they will have it figured out.”
Midway opened the scoring with a shot down on the block. The Blue Devils responded to tie and the momentum started switching back and forth. Midway opened a five point advantage at 7-2 and led 14-7 after one period of play. The Red Devils passed the ball extremely well in the middle portion of the second period and extended their lead to 10 points at 19-9. Midway led at the half, 24-14. SMMS needed to find some offense in the third but they just couldn’t find their groove. Midway pulled on out to lead 33-16 with 3:20 remaining in the third. After three periods Midway held a comfortable lead, 46-22. During the final period, the Blue Devils made one last run but couldn’t catch Midway. The final score was 56-43. Midway was led in scoring by Kaden Williams and Braeden Bennett both with 14, Dizel Ford had 11, Jeffrey Holt had 10 and Gage Ray dropped in seven. SMMS was led in scoring by Aden Roark with a game leading 17, Kaden Lovin had 13, Eric Ferguson had eight, Kris Ford had two and Jaden Meyers three points.
