December 8- The second day of the 2021 Claiborne County junior varsity basketball tournament began with a matchup between the Lady Owls of Springdale and the Lady Red Devils of Midway. When the ball was tipped off the scoring was at a premium. Finally, at 8:24 Springdale dropped the first two points of the game. The period ended 2-0. During the second period, Midway dropped in a basket to make it 2-2 at the half. Coming out of the break Springdale jumped ahead 8-4 and finished the period with the lead, 8-4. During the final period, the Lady Owls rolled ahead and won 12-5. Leading the Lady Owls was Kinsley Hayes with six, Bella Cadle had four and Lily Hudson had two. Midway was led in scoring by Chloe Holt with all five points.
The second game featured a boys contest between Midway and Soldiers Memorial Middle School. The Blue Devils scored the first five points of the game from the free throw line. Midway dropped in two points and kept the Blue Devils from running away. After one, the score was 9-2. The Blue Devils had a great second period and pushed the lead on out, but the Red Devils inched back into the game. At halftime SMMS led 13-10. At 4:28 in the third Midway had tied the game at 14. SMMS scored five straight and finished the third period, 22-20. During the final period, Midway tied the game at 22 and then took the lead 24-22. A technical foul called on Soldiers allowed Midway to lead by three, 26-23. The Blue Devils rallied and pulled to within two, 28-26. The Red Devils held off SMMS and won, 31-28. Midway was led in scoring by Lane Epperson with 11, Noah Burke had eight, Truett Tolliver had seven, Aayden Bailey had three and Brady Rosenbalm had two. SMMS was led in scoring by Eric Ferguson with 10, Mason Helton had eight, Ty Page had seven and Brayden Grim had three points.
Next was the Forge Ridge Lady Dragons versus the Lady Indians of Powell Valley. The Lady Indians rolled out to a 9-2 first period advantage and continued putting scores on the board during the second. Forge Ridge got stuck on two points until 33 seconds left in the half. They scored on a free throw but were down 17-3 at the half. Forge Ridge didn’t have an answer to the Lady Indians’ scoring pace. At the end of three Powell Valley led big, 25-5. The final period featured a rapidly moving clock and when time expired, the Lady Indians had won 27-5. Leading Powell Valley in scoring was Madison Medley with eight, McKenna Powers had six as did Cabella Duverney. Gabi Bean had five and Annah Bean had two. Forge Ridge was led by Amyiliah Petty with four and Tessa Fortner had one.
The final game of the night featured the Dragons of Forge Ridge versus Springdale on the boy’s side of the bracket. To start the game, Springdale made a run out to nine points and kept the Dragons scoreless through one period. Forge Ridge made their first basket when the second period began. At 2:13 Springdale led 15-4 and finished the half out leading 21-5. Springdale picked up the defensive pressure early in the third period and they moved on away from Forge Ridge. The score after three periods was 27-5. During the final period Springdale finished off a great effort winning 27-7. Leading Springdale in scoring was Emery Kieter with seven, Will Compton had five points, Robby Wilmoth had four as did Blake Gilbert and Xavier Nickell. The total was completed by Preston Honeycutt with two and Kaleb Cupp’s single point. The Dragons were led by Kannan Adams with five and Joseph Petty with two.
