The final round of the 2021 Claiborne County junior varsity tournament sponsored by Hearthside Bank was held, December 11.
The championship games were on the schedule but first the consolation games had to be played. The first one was the girls game and it featured the Powell Valley Lady Indians versus Springdale Lady Owls. The Lady Indians led 4-0 after one period of play and at the half they led 8-1. Powell Valley kept scoring the basketball and at the end of the game had won the third place trophy by the final score of 16-1. Springdale finished fourth.
Leading Powell Valley in scoring was Cabella Duvermey and Gabi Bean both with four each and three others had two including Alexis Hawkins, McKenna Powers, Madison Medley. There was one wrong goal basket scored for the Lady Indians. Adilyn Kelly scored the Lady Owls only point.
The next consolation game was the boys. H.Y. Livesay and Midway tipped off and the Eagles ripped a three to begin the scoring. At the end of one period they led 9-3. The Eagles continued scoring during the second period at a faster pace than the Red Devils and led at halftime, 27-5. Midway played better in the second half but still fell, 31-11. The Eagles finished third and the Red Devils fourth. Leading Livesay in scoring was Kolton Cupp and Jacob Tinnel both with nine. Noah Fultz had five, Emmitt Butler along with Cason Adams had four points. Brady Rosenbalm led Midway with four, Noah Burke had three, Bryson Meyers and Lane Epperson finished the total with two points each.
The first of two championship games featured the Soldier’s Memorial Middle School Lady Blue Devils versus the Lady Eagles of H.Y. Livesay. Livesay opened up with five quick points and forced SMMS to take a timeout. After one period of play they had moved ahead by 12 points, 14-2. The Lady Blue Devils inched back in the game and with 2:22 remaining in the half, had the score down to nine points 14-5. H.Y. got a basket late and led at the half, 16-5. The Lady Blue Devils came out of the locker room focused on changing the momentum. SMMS had the game down to an eight point one nearing one minute to go but H.Y. finished the period leading 20-11. Early in the fourth SMMS made it a seven point game and the two swapped baskets. Livesay scored just enough in the final minutes to keep SMMS in the rear view and won the Claiborne County junior varsity basketball tournament championship 27-21.
Leading the Lady Eagles in scoring was Allie Owens with 16, Amillya Smith had nineand Ava Fuson had two. SMMS was led by Emma Ferguson with 10, Ily Webb and Tayleigh Stansberry with four, Jaylynn Brooks had two and CJ Hatfield had one.
The boys championship was next between the Springdale Owls and Powell Valley Indians. It was a fast paced first period with the Indians leading 5-1 going into the second. Springdale hit a big three moments in the second and reminded the Indians that they were still there. Powell Valley stayed just out front ending the first half with an 11-6 lead. Coming out of the break the Indians got an easy baskets. Springdale began to show signs of frustration when Powell Valley moved ahead 17-8. Powell Valley finished the third period with a 20-13 lead. Springdale needed to grab the momentum away early to have a shot at a comeback. Powell Valley did what it took to win the championship by the final score of 29-18. Colby Weaver led the Indians with eight points. Korbin Goins had seven, Luke Lloyd had six, Hunter Ellison along with Braden Lane dropped in four each. Robby Wilmoth led Springdale with seven, Blake Gilbert had six, Emery Kieter had three and Will Compton had two.
The Girls All Tournament Team members included: Brooke Partin, Chloe Holt, Azailiah Petty, Kinsley Hayes, Madison Medley, Gabi Bean, Emma Ferguson, CJ Hatfield, Tayleigh Stansberry, Ava Fuson, Peyton Owens, Natalie Davis and Amillya Smith. The Most Valuable Player was Allie Owens.
The Boys All Tournament Team members included Conner Mundy, Eric Ferguson, Kanaan Adams, Lane Epperson, Jacob Tinnel, Casen Adams, Emery Kieter, Robby Wilmoth, Blake Gilbert, Korbin Goins, Luke Lloyd, Hunter Ellison and Braden Lane. The Most Valuable Player was Colby Weaver.
