Claiborne High School Hosted Cumberland Gap for the second regular season meeting, February 4. Cumberland Gap took the victory in both junior varsity games with the first win during the JV girls’ contest. The Lady Panthers opened a 30-17 first half advantage and never looked back. The final was 55-31. Leading the Gap in scoring was Brynlee Foster with 12 points and Callie Hoskins with 10. Gracie Nash and Hayden Beeler both had nine, Jennabeth Wilburn had six, Emrey Glover had five and Ashlynn Roberts finished with four points. Claiborne was led by Katie Hicks with 12, Ily Bussell had 10, Channing Buis had four as did Carley Hall and Daisy Bailey had one point.
During the JV boy’s game, the Panthers held a three-point lead at the half and won by seven at 50-43. Kaleb Powers led the way for the Gap with 12 and Ethan Powell had 10, Isaac Brown had seven, Gavin Owens and Andy Osborne both had six, Braedon Painter had five and Alex Douglas finished with four. The Bulldogs were led by Jake Smith with a game leading 16, Josh Bolton and Vince Bolden had eight, Evan Thomas had four, Brady Hamlin had three, Brennan Fugate and Ethan Short both had two rounding out the total.
During the varsity girl’s game, the Lady Panthers were looking for the season sweep and were able to accomplish that goal by taking an 18-13 halftime advantage and pushing it out to a 50-36 victory. Emrey Glover was once again outstanding scoring the basketball with 23. Abbie Fultz rebounded the ball well with nine plus placed 17 on the scoreboard. Hayden Beeler and Brynlee Foster both had three points and Gracie Nash along with Kylie Fultz scored two points. For the Lady Bulldogs, Emma Myatt led with 13, Allie Jones had 10, Hailey Sexton had six, Jordan Fultz had three, Taylor Pressnell and Hannah Fugate both placed two points each in the book.
The final game of the night was the boys’ varsity game. Claiborne won the first meeting and wanted to sweep their rival. In true fashion, the two teams battled neck and neck throughout the first half. Claiborne held a one-point lead at 20-19. During the second half, play was tough as expected between the two rivals, but Claiborne held an 11-point advantage going into the final period, 39-28. The Bulldogs held on and completed the regular season sweep by the final score of 46-41. Leading the Bulldogs in scoring was with Ethan Cupp with 19 points, Levi Peoples had 10, Seth Morelock dropped in nine. Tyler Myatt had six, Landen Wilson had five, Zack Bailey had four and Brennan Fugate finished the total with three. The Panthers were led in scoring by Lance Owens with 11, Gavin Owen with nine, Isaac Brown had six points, Trace Provins had five, Gabriel Peterson had four, Kaleb Powers, Andy Osborne and Aiden Jackson all had two points.
