The Claiborne High School Lady Bulldogs hosted their first annual Spike Out Cancer volleyball game against Union County.
Coach Christy Brooks had this to say about the event, “I wanted the team to know that community is equally as important as these games and sometimes more so. Our kids embraced the idea and that’s important.”
The junior varsity match was first on the court and it was the Lady Patriots winning the opening set 25-18 after taking a 15-8 lead. During the second set, Claiborne led 2-0 and Union County went a on a run and won the set 25-19 and the match 2-0.
The varsity Lady Bulldogs stepped on the court next and kept the lead through 12. The Lady Patriots then ran away from the Lady Bulldogs on the scoreboard and went on to win 25-16.
Claiborne needed to rally in the second set but after the set was tied at five, it was all Union County. They won set two by the final 25-15.
To avoid a straight set loss the Lady Bulldogs simply had to rally and play better. They led 2-0 but the lead swapping began. The lead was tied at 17,19, 20 and 22 but the Union County Lady Patriots won the third set 25-22 and the match in three straight sets.
Following the match Coach Brooks spoke about her team, “I think we did some good things tonight against a good team, but we are still having to think about what we are doing, and our communication wasn’t like it needed to be. We can coach them but at some point, they need to start improving individually. Still, I am proud of how far they have come since we started the JV program last season.”
The Commercial Bank Player of the Game Award was earned by Kinley Mullins. She dove all over the court and was getting productive digs and serves. Congratulations Kinley!
