Cumberland Gap falls to Union County

The Union County Patriots visited Cumberland Gap on September 9th to take on the Panthers.

Cumberland Gap took the ball first and put together a long drive eating up almost half of the first quarter. Kyle Figueroa put the Panthers on the board first with a three yard touchdown run. The two point try was unsuccessful and Cumberland Gap led the Patriots 6-0 with 6:12 left in the 1st quarter.

Union County quickly answered with a 31 yard pass to Peyton Ray from Micah Treece. Joey Stratton ran in the two point conversion and the Patriots then led Cumberland Gap 8-6 with 3:20 left in the first which also was the score at the end of the first quarter.

Cumberland Gap recovered a Union County fumble by Treece deep in the Panthers red zone. The Panthers didn’t waste any time in scoring as Figueroa got into the end zone again this time from two yards out. The two point try was no good and Cumberland Gap was then back on top 12-8 with 10:14 left in the first half.

Union County responded with a short drive that ended in a one yard touchdown run by Derrick Cooper. The two point try was unsuccessful and the Patriots were back on top 14-12 over Cumberland Gap with 6:51 left in the first half.

Kole Welch answered back for the Panthers with a three yard touchdown run. The two point try was again unsuccessful but Cumberland Gap was back on top of Union County 18-14 with 1:04 left in the first half.

Union County snuck back in front just before the end of the first half as Treece hit Cooper from 16 yards out for a score. Stratton rolled in on the quarterback keeper two point try and with :09 left in the half Cumberland Gap again trailed 22-18. That score would carry us into halftime.

Union County scored again to start the second half as Treece hits Lucas Welch for a 30 yard touchdown. Treece then connected with Brayden Henderson for the two point try. Union County then led Cumberland Gap 30-18 with 8:02 left in the third quarter.

Cumberland Gap again answered back as Brayden Painter hits Kole Welch for a 49 yard touchdown. The two point try was again unsuccessful though and Union County held a 30-24 lead with 2:34 left in the third quarter.

After three quarters of action Cumberland Gap trailed Union County 30-24.

At the 9:52 mark in the fourth quarter Figueroa got heavy pressure on Treece and Painter picked off the pass to give Cumberland Gap a shot at tying or taking the lead but they turned it back over to Union County with 6:25 left in the game.

Union County was able to take advantage of that fumble add another score to the board as Cooper scored from 10 yards out. The extra point try was unsuccessful and Cumberland Gap trailed the Patriots 36-24 at the 2:21 mark of the fourth quarter.

Union County sealed the win after intercepting a pass from Painter at the goal line with :39 left in the game. Then knock a knee on offense to secure the Patriots victory by a score of 36-24.
