The 2022 Claiborne County Junior Varsity Basketball Tournament began, December 5, at Claiborne High School. Soldier’s Memorial Middle School was the hosting school. Game photos can be viewed or purchased at aep.photoreflect.com as low as one dollar.
The first game on schedule was the Soldier’s Memorial Middle School versus Powell Valley in a girl’s contest. The two teams swapped baskets early in the first period and then the defenses took over. With 20 seconds left SMMS took the lead and led at the end of one 4-2. The Lady Blue Devils came on strong during the second period and quickly moved ahead 8-4. The Lady Indians used defensive pressure to get a steal but missed a shot on the other end. SMMS had the chance to pull away at the free throw line but just couldn’t get them to fall; however, at the half the score was 14-6 after a late run. The Lady Blue Devils used transition basketball to stay out front during the third period and led 22-8. During the final period the Lady Indians defense helped them score first making it 22-10. SMMS responded and quickly made it 26-10. The game ended with the Lady Blue Devils winning 28-12. The leading scorer for SMMS was Leah Sandefur with 14, Geneva Rose has six, Lailah Nunn had three as did Lorali Lakins and Ella Poore had two. Powell Valley was led in scoring by Cabella Duverney who scored all 12 points. The Matt Compton State Farm Players of the game were Leah Sandifur for SMMS and Cabella Duverney for Powell Valley. Congratulations Leah and Cabella!
The second game was supposed to feature the Clairfield Eagles and Powell Valley Indians, but sickness kept the Eagles from attending and allowed the Indians to move on.
The next game featured the girls of Springdale versus Midway. Springdale threw down the first four points and then Midway got on the board. With 1:45 remaining in the first period the Lady Owls pushed the score out to 6-2. Under a minute left Midway hit two free throws and were within two points at 6-4. The first period ended 6-4. Midway took the lead when the second period began and then Springdale responded and led 10-7 with 1:10 left in the first half. At the half the Lady Owls led 10-9. Coming out of the locker room it all came down to who wanted this game more. Springdale hit a long two-pointer to open the third period, 12-9. Both defenses were giving their all during the latter part of the third and getting off a clean shot was nearly impossible. With 1:33 left in the period it was a two-point game with Springdale holding the lead. After three periods the Lady Owls led 12-11. Scoring was slow during the opening of the fourth period. Springdale hit the first basket of the final period and extended their advantage to three points, 14-11. The Springdale defense helped the Lady Owls out with two easy baskets on the offensive end that made it 20-11. Midway ran out of time and fell to Springdale 20-11. The leading scorer for the Lady Owls was Kinsley Hayes with eight, Adily Kelly had four as did Bella Cadle. Olivia Rose and Averie Weaver had two each. Midway was led by Gracie Bolden with four, Addison Dyke had four, Addyson Johnson had two and Briar Miracle had one point. The Matt Compton State Farm Players of the Game were Kinsley Hayes for the Lady Owls and Gracie Bolden with four. Congratulations Kinsley and Gracie.
The final game was Springdale and Midway on the boy’s side of the bracket. Midway opened the scoring up then Springdale tied it at two. The Red Devils then inched away and were leading 6-2 with 1:40 left in the opening period. Midway then hit one of two free throws and led 7-2. At the end of one period of play Midway led a physical game 7-2. Midway hit the first basket of the second period extending their lead out to 9-2. With just over two minutes left in the first half, Midway had scored 14 unanswered points. At the half, the Red Devils enjoyed a comfortable 23-2 lead. Scoring was at a premium for both teams during the start of the third. Springdale got some good looks just couldn’t convert. Midway’s only score was a free throw up until the two-minute mark. The Owls finally hit a basket making the scoreboard read 24-5. Midway led 25-9 after three periods. Midway extended their lead out to 27-10 but Springdale had not quit. The Owls hit a basket down near the paint making it 27-12. Midway had went to the bench and Springdale was chipping away at the score. With 2:26 remaining the score was 27-14. The Red Devils won the contest 27-14. Leading Midway in scoring was Bryson Meyers with 12, Aayden Bailey with five, Brady Rosenbalm and Pierce Sutton with three and Jarrett maples along with Devon Cox finished with two each. Springdale was led by Brody Martin with 11, Brantley Burke with two and Nathan Jones with one point. The Matt Compton State Farm Players of the Game were Bryson Meyers for Midway and Brody Martin for Springdale. Congratulations Bryson and Brody!
