2022 Claiborne County Junior Varsity Tournament, Day 2

Day two of the Claiborne County Junior Varsity Basketball Tournament was held, December 6, at Claiborne High School.

The first game on schedule featured the girls of the number one seeded H.Y. Livesay Lady Eagles versus Springdale Lady Owls. Springdale jumped ahead on the scoreboard but Livesay tied it at two. The Lady Eagles jumped ahead by two but Springdale tied it at four. The two teams went back and forth on the scoreboard but at the end of the first period Livesay made a seven point run to lead 13-6. The Lady Eagles opened it up even further with good three-point shooting. With 3:30 remaining in the first half they led 20-8. Springdale made a small rally but were still down 20-12. Coming out of the locker room Livesay was still shooting lights out. The score was 27-14 with 3:44 remaining in the third.  Springdale was giving their all to make a comeback but Livesay simply kept scoring and led after three periods 36-16. Both teams went to the benches during the final period and the Lady Eagles won the game by the final score of 38-18.  H.Y. was led in scoring by Allie Owens with 18. Amillya Smith had 12 and Ava Fuson,  Baylee Spradlin, Raylynn  and Tinley Stamper all had two. Springdale was led by Kinsley Hayes with 16 and Bella Cadle had two.

The Matt Compton State Farm Players of the Game were Allie Owens for H.Y. and Kinsley Hayes for Springdale.  Congratulations Allie and Kinsley.

The second game of the night featured the number one seeded Eagles of H.Y. Livesay against the five seed Powell Valley Indians.  Scoring was slow but Livesay dropped in the first two of the game followed by a responding Indians basket. With 1:14 left in the first Livesay led 3-2. At the end of the opening period the Eagles led 5-2. The second period had slow scoring as well. The Eagles pulled ahead slightly at 8-5 but it was still anyone’s game to win. During the third period the Eagles pulled ahead and led 22-7. Powell Valley needed to make a run in the final period; however,  it did not happen and the Eagles won the game 33-7. Leading the Eagles in scoring was Bryson Gibson with nine, Kanaan Adams had eight. Emmitt Butler had seven, Kellon  Bolinger had four, Hudson Cadle  had two along with Ryan Garside and Collin Killion had one point. Powell Valley was led by Colton Lloyd with three and Casen Bolinger had two as did Korbin Goins.

The Matt Compton State Farm Players of the Game were Bryson Gibson for H.Y. and Colton Lloyd for Powell Valley.  Congratulations Bryson and Colton.

The third game of day two featured the girls side of the bracket with Soldier’s Memorial Middle battling the Forge Ridge Lady Dragons.  The Lady Dragons struck first in a low scoring first period. At the end of the first Forge Ridge led 2-0. The scoring in the second period was slow as well. Midway through the second the scoreboard remained at 2-0. With 2:40 left in the half Forge Ridge hit their second basket making it 4-0. SMMS hit their first basket just under 40 seconds remaining in the half. The Blue Devils were down 5-2 at the half. SMMS scored just under the three minute mark of the third making the scoreboard read 5-4. After three periods of play the score remained 5-4. With 5:02 a basketball circled the SMMS goal and dropped tying the game at six. The Lady Blue Devils took their first lead with 3:10 left in the game, 8-6. SMMS added a free throw and the time expired with the Lady Blue Devils getting a 9-6 win. Leading SMMS in scoring was Lorali Lakins with three,  and three others had two including Lailah Nunn,  Geneva Rose and Leah Sandifur.  Jaelyn Powers had two for Forge Ridge as did Makinley Wilson.  Ryleigh Sturgill and Emma Brock had one each.

The Matt Compton State Farm Players of the Game were Lorali Lakins for SMMS and Jaelyn Powers along with Makinley Wilson.  Congratulations to all three.

 

 

 

The final game was a boys game between Forge Ridge and SMMS.  The Blue Devils opened up with a 4-0 run and the speed at guard was giving the Dragons trouble. At the end of the first the score was 6-0. Forge Ridge got their first basket at the start of the second period but they still couldn’t slow SMMS down. At the end of the first half the Blue Devils led 16-2. The Dragons made a late third period run and got closer but the Blue Devils still led after three, 20-6. SMMS kept ahead of the Dragons and won by the final score of 26-12. Leading SMMS in scoring was Colton Brewer with eight,  Trevaur Taylor had six, Travaun Taylor had four, four others had two each including Ty Page, Brayden Grimm,  Aiden Pressnell  and Daniel Bailey.  Forge Ridge was led by Joseph Petty with eight and Max Collingsworth with four.

Thr Matt Compton State Farm Players of the Game were Colton Brewer for SMMS and Joseph Petty for the Dragons.
