Claiborne High School hosted Cosby, January 17. There were only three games on schedule with the lone junior varsity game featuring the girls.
Claiborne grabbed an early lead and Cosby responded with a run that gave them the lead. The two teams were tied at 11 after the first period of play. The second period featured the Lady Eagles shooting better than Claiborne. At the half, Cosby led 21-14. Coming out of the locker room, the Lady Bulldogs needed to make a serious run, but it was Cosby moving the scoreboard. After three periods, the score was 42-24. Claiborne rallied in the fourth and made it a 10-point game at 42-32. The Lady Eagles turned momentum back in their favor and took the victory at 52-40.
Carlie Laprade led Claiborne with 10, Jacey Ferguson had seven, Emily Buchanan and Jossilyn Robbins had six, Katie Hicks had five, Avalynn Cook along with Hope Cole and Jaylen Pressnell had two points. Leading Cosby in scoring was Hance with 13, Hicks with 10 and Bible also with 10.
Next to take the court were the varsity girls’ teams. Claiborne opened up strong, but so did Cosby. The Lady Eagles shot the three ball well and led 9-4 early. CHS had the lead back with just over two minutes left in the first 14-13. The rest of the period was back and forth with Cosby leading 18-16. During the second period, the game was one of runs. At the four-minute mark, the game was tied at 22. Claiborne out-hustled Cosby, especially on the offensive end of the court, and that caused the Cosby coach to call for a timeout to discuss it loudly with his team. With three minutes left in the half, the score was 25-22, Cosby. The Lady Eagles led 30-26 at the half. Claiborne let the Lady Eagles go on a 5-2 run to start the third period. Claiborne responded and made it 35-32 with 3:39 showing on the clock. The third period ended with a Cosby basket on the third offensive rebound. The score was 48-41, Cosby. Cosby had the three ball to rely on when the game got close and Claiborne played with urgency, but each time they closed up on the scoreboard the Lady Eagles had the answer but despite that Claiborne somehow scratched and clawed back to a tie game at 58 with 1:09 remaining. 64-60 was the final after the Lady Eagles hit key free throws. Leading Claiborne in scoring during the close loss was Taylor Pressnell with 16. Addie Brooks had 13 as did Hannah Fugate. Allie Jones had seven, Emma Myatt had six and Jordan Fultz had five, Cosby was led by Shylee Shelton with 33 points. Alexis Mecum had 17. Ali Smith and Kenedee Langford both had five. Chloe Hance had two points.
The Heartland Real Estate Player of the game was Addie Brooks. Congratulations, Addie!
The boys’ varsity game took the court at the Carl Green Gymnasium for the final game of the night. Claiborne came out wearing purple trim in support of Tyler Holt and got off to a fast start at 6-4. The two teams went back and forth on the scoreboard, and Claiborne was down 11-10. Claiborne suffered from ill-advised passing and turnovers that allowed Cosby to move away on the scoreboard. With 4:35 remaining in the half, the score was 21-12. Cosby took all the momentum with timely threes and led the game at the half, 40-18. Coming out of the break, CHS needed a fast momentum swing. Cosby kept the Bulldogs at bay no matter what Claiborne tried. Missed shots and bad passes haunted Claiborne in the third period as well. At the end of three periods, Cosby led 51-31. The fourth period featured one last run from Claiborne, but they didn’t get the Cosby advantage under 10. The Eagles went home with the 71-46 win. Leading CHS in scoring was Ethan Cupp with 21. Ethan Short had seven, Kaden Williams had four, Brennan Fugate along with Brady Hamlin and Tyler Myatt all had three points. Vince Bolden had two along with CJ Cox. Evan Thomas finished the game with one point. Cosby was led by Shayden O’Dell with 19, Jayston Fine with 14, Slate Shropshire with 11 and Peyton Raines with 10 points.
