Claiborne High School hosted Greeneville, January 24. Only three games were on the schedule, with the first being a junior varsity boys game. Greeneville came into town talented as always, and Claiborne grabbed a two-point lead, but at the end of the first period, the Bulldogs were down 18-14. The Green Devils opened it up during the second period. They scored from deep and in the paint with a few free throws also in the mix. With 5:23, the remaining score was 26-16. The halftime score was 37-22. Coming out of the break, Greeneville made another run and led 58-36 going into the final period. The final period was another one where Greeneville pulled on away. The final score was 78-51. Brayden Painter led Claiborne with 20, Cole Holt scored 13, Hunter Greer had seven, Drew Epperson had five, Kaden Willams had four and Kaden Lovin scored two. Greeneville was led by Dominic Tweed with 20 and Zaydun Anderson with 18. Also scoring in double figures was Mitchell McMahon with 10 points.
The Lady Bulldogs varsity team battled the Lady Green Devils next, and Greeneville started with a 6-3 run. Claiborne struggled with the Greeneville press, and the transition baskets for the Lady Green Devils helped them lead 30-12. Claiborne played hard during the second period while trying to stay close to Greeneville, but at the end of the first half, Greeneville led 50-25. Coming out of the halftime break, Claiborne needed to make a huge run; however, the Lady Green Devils quickly pushed their lead out to 32 points. The third period ended, 68-37. Claiborne tried to rally during the final period, but Greeneville took away the momentum with defense and a demoralizing three. The final score was 80-45. Claiborne was led by Hannah Fugate with 22, Taylor Pressnell had 13. Allie Jones scored six, Emma Myatt had three, and Ily Bussell scored one point. Lauren Bailey led Greeneville with 19, and Tambryn Ellenburg had 18. Also scoring in double figures was Anna Shaw with 13.
The Heartland Real Estate Player of the game was Hannah Fugate. Congratulations Hannah!
The final game was the boys’ varsity contest, and Claiborne fans knew this one would be rough without three starters due to injury. Not playing was Tyler Myatt, Brennan Fugate, and Ethan Cupp. The Green Devils went on an 11-2 run to start the game. After one period of play, Claiborne was down 22-7. Long stretches of play allowed the minutes to quickly tick away, and with just under four minutes left in the first half, the Green Devils led 43-12. At the half, Greeneville led 48-14. During the third, Greeneville had it on cruise control and after three periods led by 40 at 60-20. During the final period, Claiborne battled but lost the game by the final score of 76-31. Evan Thomas and Stephen Thomas led Claiborne with eight points each. Jake Smith had five, Brady Hamlin had three, Vince Bolden along with CJ Cox and Ethan Short each had two points. Cole Holt had one point. Jayquan Price had 15 and Kameron Lester also reached double figures with 13. Nine other Green Devils recorded scores.
