The Claiborne Lady Bulldogs had to travel to Cherokee in order to begin play at the 2022-23 District 2-AAA basketball tournament, February 17. The Lady Bulldogs advanced to round two after taking down Cherokee by the final score of 40-33.
The Lady Chiefs and Lady Bulldogs had a slow start to the game as they only dropped in eight points each during the opening period. Ily Bussell scored three points to help CHS get off to a quick start. Hannah Fugate, Emma Myatt and Taylor Pressnell added the additional scoring. Strangely, Claiborne didn’t record a single point during the second period but allowed the home team to drop in 10 points. Cherokee led by 10 at the half 18-8.
It was Jordan Fultz and Fugate that inspired the Lady Bulldogs comeback during the third period. Between them they dropped in 10 of Claiborne’s 16 points. They outscored Cherokee 16-5 in the third and led the game by one point going into the final period. Another 16-point period by the Lady Bulldogs all but sealed the win. Defensively Claiborne only gave up 10 points in the final period. Allie Jones took over the fourth period and scored all 12 of her points. The 40-33 victory propelled Claiborne into round two play February 18 at Cherokee this time against Greeneville with the tip-off scheduled for 3 PM.
Jones led CHS in scoring with 12, Fugate had eight, Myatt and Fultz both finished with five, Pressnell had four, Bussell along with Addie Brooks had three points each completing the total.
