February 17- Claiborne High School, Twin Lakes Conference, District 2-AAA Basketball Tournament.
Claiborne and Grainger tipped off during the final game of day two with a trip to the district championship game against Greeneville on the line, February 20. This one was expected by everyone to be a close game and it was just that. CHS led by three, 14-11 after one period and the two teams were tied at the half at 24. The Bulldogs established the lead during the third and led by six, 42-36. Everyone in the Carl Green Gymnasium expected the Grizzlies to have one last run and they did not disappoint. Claiborne used free throws in the end to seal the one-point win, 55-54.
Three seniors for Claiborne stepped up with double figures. Ethan Cupp led with 18, Evan Thomas had 12 and Brady Hamlin had 10. Jake Smith and Josh Bolton both scored four, C.J. Cox had three, Vince Bolden and Cole Holt finished with two points. Carter Williams had an outstanding performance for the Grizz and scored 17. Brizen Soloman and Ashton Creswell both had 12, Kade Williams had nine and Jaxon Maxey scored a single point. * All scores are unofficial.
With the win Claiborne will battle Greeneville in the championship game Tuesday and Grainger will compete in the consolation game.
