December 11- The third day of the 2024 Claiborne County JV Basketball Tournament featured four games. The tournament is hosted by Clairfield and held at Cumberland Gap High School.
The first game was a matchup between Springdale and Soldier’s Memorial Middle School on the girls’ side of the bracket. Bristol Stone scored early and often and led the team to a 20-0 victory, with nine points. Emily Burke and Madison Parrish both had three. Presley Rose and Adelyn Williams both had two. SMMS did not have a player enter the scoring book.
Game two between Springdale and Midway on the boys’ side was forecasted to be very competitive. However, it was the Red Devils rolling out to a 19-4 lead with just under three minutes left in the opening half of play. At the half, Midway led 30-6. The Red Devils continued to play well and led 36-11 after three. Springdale and Midway went heavy to the bench during the final period. In the end, Midway moved on in the winner’s bracket with a 43-14 victory. Leading the Red Devils in scoring was Bryce England with 15. Landon Callahan had 10, Ryder England had eight, Josiah Fraces scored four, and Collin Rosson had two along with Ryan Treece. Springdale was led by Walker Combs with four. Isaiah Keiter had three, Eli Asher had two, and Jace Gray scored one.
The third game went back over to the girls. It was Midway versus H.Y. Livesay. The Lady Red Devils went on a 6-0 run during the first period and began the second with a 6-0 score. The scoring almost stopped during the second. At the halftime buzzer, the score was still in favor of Midway, 8-2. After three, the score was 10-4, with Midway still out front. Livesay wouldn’t quit and played hard. When the time went to all zeros, Midway had won, 14-8. Leading the Red Devils in scoring was McKinley Miracle with six, Tori Spurlock had four. Two others dropped in two each, including Kailyn Williams and Kaelyn Seal. The Eagles were led by Josie Lawson with six and Jalyn Peters with two. Springdale will face Midway in tomorrow’s championship game.
The final boys’ game was between SMMS and H.Y. Livesay. A trip to the championship game was on the line with the winner facing Midway. In a low scoring first period, H.Y. led 4-0. The Blue Devils finally got on the scoreboard later in the second, and the Eagles lead was decreased to 8-4. Going into the third, it was anyone’s game. SMMS played well and stayed close to the Eagles. Going into the final period, the Eagles led 14-6. A technical foul on SMMS highlighted the start of the fourth period. The three-pointers came alive for the Blue Devils, and they had the lead down to three with 3:28 remaining, 15-12. At the 2:30 mark, the game was tied at 15. SMMS took their first lead at the free throw line, 16-15. The last 45 seconds were exciting, and SMMS secured the win, 17-15. Leading SMMS in scoring was Braxdon Lovin with 12. Jacob Goodin had three. Braxden Ferrell and Noah Chumley had one. Jaxson Dixson had eight to lead the Eagles. Teagan May had four, Norris Cadle had two, and Sawyer Cook had one. SMMS will face Midway in the Championship.
