December 19- The 2024 Claiborne County Varsity Middle School Basketball Tournament Championship Day was held at Claiborne High School and hosted by Midway Elementary. Imperial Transport was the tournament sponsor.
The first game of the evening was a girl’s consolation game between Midway and Soldier’s Memorial Middle School. Midway started well and led 10-5 after one. The Lady Blue Devils warmed up in the second and took the lead, 14-12. Regulation wasn’t enough time for these two teams as they went into overtime tied at 29. The Lady Red Devils won in overtime, 37-32. Leading the way for Midway was McKinley Miracle with 12, Briar Miracle had eight, Gracie Bolden had seven, Tori Spurlock had six, and Kailyn Williams along with Keylee Shoffner both had two points. The Lady Blue Devils were led in scoring by Leah Sandifur with 15. Lorali Lakins had nine, Lailah Nunn scored five, Aria Ford had two, and Gabby Libres-Stone one. The Matt Compton State Farm Player of the Game was McKinley Miracle. Midway earned the tournaments’ third place.
Game two was the boys’ consolation and H.Y. Livesay led after every period. The Eagles turned a 15-10 halftime lead into a 30-17 Victor to capture third place. Collin Killion led the Eagles with nine, Bryson Gibson had eight, Ryan Garside had four, Casen Adams and Hudson Cadle had three each. Nate Bain scored two. Powell Valley was led by Korbin Goins with eight, Casen Bolinger and Andrew Humfleet each had three. Jaxon Taylor scored two, and Cooper Chumley finished with one. The Matt Compton State Farm Player of the Game was Collin Killion.
Next on the floor was the girls’ championship game featuring Livesay and Springdale. The Lady Eagles rolled out front to start the game and led 12-4 after one. During the second period, they increased their lead out to 19-7. The Lady Owls had more energy in the third period but still trailed by 21 after three at 34-13. In the final period, Livesay stayed ahead on the scoreboard and won 41-19. Leading the way in scoring for the Lady Eagles was Allie Owens with 15. Owens was the Matt Compton State Farm Player of the Game. Amilya Smith had 12, Ava Fuson had nine, Lexi Dison had three, and Elle Harris had two. Springdale was led by Madison Parrish with seven, Kinsley Hayes had six, Bella Cadle, Payton Surber, and Elle Buchanan, each had three.
The final game was the boys’ championship game featuring the Midway Red Devils and Soldier’s Memorial Middle School. SMMS started quickly and led after one, 11-7. SMMS stayed consistent during the start of the second period, but Midway stormed back, and 31 seconds remaining had evened up the game. At the half, the score was tied at 19. This game continued to go back and forth. At the 4:12 mark of the third, it was tied at 22. With 2:41 left the score was 30-26 in favor of Midway. Going into the final period, Midway led 35-29. With 3:09 remaining, the Red Devils led 42-30. Midway sealed the deal and won 45-33. Aayden Bailey hit seven threes and scored 23 in total to lead Midway. Brady Rosenbalm and Landon Callahan both had seven. Pierce Sutton scored four, Jarrett Maples and Bentley Bays both dropped in two. Breaton Ford and Trevaur Taylor both had 10, Brayden Grim had seven and Colton Brewer scored four. Parker Herrell dropped in two. Aayden Bailey was the Matt Compton State Farm Player of the Game. Midway won first place in cheer, SMMS won second, Springdale third and Livesay fourth. In dance, it was Livesay first and Midway second.
