AN INSPIRATION TO MANY!
The final inductee of the 2024 Claiborne County Sports Hall of Fame is Jeremiah Bean. Jeremiah Bean is the epitome of what a great athlete can be and later become.
As a key player on one of the best basketball teams at Powell Valley High School, Bean led on the court, almost breaking the assists record. Later in life, he was dealt a health issue that would define who he was. In 2001, he was diagnosed with a tumor and was told he had two months to live. With a tumor around the size of a football, Jeremiah went through radiation treatments, all while coaching youth sports as an assistant or head coach.
His wife, Nephateria, said this about Jeremiah, “He has always kept the faith and prayed to be able to work to support his family and the community. He has done just that.”
Bean was an assistant coach at H.Y. Livesay in the early 2000’s, Powell Valley for many years, and helped coach them to several championships, both in junior varsity and varsity. He has been an assistant coach on a district championship team and currently coaches the Cumberland Gap softball team. Bean also coached the winningest season in the history of Cumberland Gap softball during 2021.
Jeremiah Bean could have given up and let the tumor define him negatively, but instead, he chose to battle for his family and to serve his community. For his efforts in local sports as an athlete and a coach, on and off the field, Jeremiah Bean has been selected to the Claiborne County Sports Hall of Fame presented by Matt Compton, State Farm.
