December 18- The 2024 Claiborne County Varsity Muddle School Basketball Tournament second day was held at Claiborne High School and hosted by Midway Elementary. Imperial Transport was the tournament sponsor.
The first game of the evening was a girl’s contest featuring Springdale and Soldier’s Memorial Middle School. In a low scoring contest, Springdale led at the half, 9-6. The Lady Owls had a big third period, and by the games’ end had won, 30-20. Kinsley Hayes led Springdale with 10, Bristol Stone had seven, Madison Parrish had four, as did #24, who was not listed on our roster tonight. Adilyn Kelly scored three, and Olivia Rose had two. Lailah Nunn led SMMS with 10, Geneva Rose had five, Leah Sandifur dropped in three. Julianna Hall and Gabby Stone had one.
Next on the floor was Midway and Livesay. Midway kept the lead most of the game, but the Eagles stayed close on the scoreboard. In the end, the Red Devils entered the championship game with a 47-40 victory. Pierce Sutton was fantastic on both ends, scoring 19 points. Brady Rosenbalm had 12, Jarrett Maples had seven, Landon Callahan scored five, and Aayden Bailey had three. Collin Killion led Livesay with 14, and Nate Bain had 10. Bryson Gibson scored seven. Hudson Cadle and Casen Adams both had four, Ryan Garside had three, and Bentlee Lewis dropped in one point.
Next, the tournament went back to the girls’ side. This one featured H.Y. Livesay and Midway. The Lady Eagles jumped ahead during the first and led at the half, 29-13. Midway got caught in a buzz saw during the third as the Lady Eagles rolled on away. After three, the score was 43-17. It was much of the same during the final period as Livesay stayed out front winning, 50-21. Leading the Lady Eagles in scoring was Allie Owens with 18 points. Lexi Dison had 10, Elle Harris had seven, Ava Fuson had six, and Amillya Smith also had six. Baylee Spradlin finished the total with two. For Midway, McKinley Miracle had Six, Gracie Bolden scored three, Aubrey Bailey, along with Kailyn Williams and Jordyn Shoffner each scored two. H.Y. moved on to the championship game to battle Springdale.
The final game of day three featured SMMS versus Powell Valley on the boys’ side. The Blue Devils pulled ahead in the first period with a 9-2 run and, at the end of the period, led 13-4. The Blue Devils kept the Indians from making a run and were still leading at the half, 18-9. Powell Valley did not go away during the opening of the third period until a technical foul gave SMMS free throws that allowed them to lead by 10. The score entering the fourth period was 24-12. The Blue Devils went on a run to start the fourth period and just under three minutes remaining led 32-16. SMMS won the game, 39-21. Leading SMMS in scoring was Trevaur Taylor with 16. Brayden Grimm and Breaton Ford had nine. Colton Brewer and Trauvon Taylor had two. Powell Valley was led by Korbin Goins with 15, Casen Bolinger had four, and Jaxon Taylor had two. SMMS advanced to the championship game to battle Midway.
