April 25- Claiborne Hosted Greeneville for a big game of district softball which turned into a very exciting game for many reasons.
During the first inning, Greeneville took advantage of Lady Bulldogs mistakes and made the score 2-0. In their half of the first, the Lady Bulldogs had a baserunner erased at third on a steal attempt and they left runners on base ending the first inning, 2-0.
Greeneville left runners on base during the top of the second and in Claiborne’s half, Pressnell singled and scored two. Stansberry then doubled and gave the Lady Bulldogs a two-run lead at 4-2. CHS got another run when the Devils checked a Lady Bulldog back to third, and the throw got away. Lawson then smashed a double scoring Stansberry, making it 6-2 in favor of the Lady Bulldogs.
During Greeneville’s half of the third inning, they had two on the base pads with only one down. An infield fly rule was applied for out two, but the next pitch was hit by the defense and Greeneville scored two runs, 6-4. A pop fly ended the inning, 6-4. The Lady Bulldogs went down in order during the bottom of the third. The score remained 6-4.
In the top of the fourth, Greeneville manufactured three runs and took a 7-6 lead. The Lady Bulldogs left one runner on base in the bottom of the fifth, 7-6.
During the Lady Green Devils fifth, a triple scored two more runs to extend the Devils advantage to 9-6. The Lady Bulldogs left one on base, and the score remained 9-6.
In the top of the sixth, Greeneville scored two more but left the bases loaded. Emotions were running high, and the umpire had to talk to both fan bases. Claiborne’s pitcher, Sweet, had to leave the game due to a medical issue. The score was 11-6 in the middle of the sixth. Hall doubled and scored Stansberry who reached on a single. Hall was then knocked to the plate by Hollin making it 11-8. Lawson singled but Claiborne left two on base when the inning ended. 11-8 was the score going into the final inning.
In the top of the seventh, Hollin was in the circle in relief of Sweet and held the Green Devils scoreless and gave her offense a chance. Widner and Pressnell was on the pads for Mullins. Widner scored cutting into the lead 11-9. Stansberry then hit an RBI single making the score 11-10 and the Lady Bulldogs were threatening; however, Greeneville made plays and ended the Lady Bulldogs comeback attempt one run short, 11-10. Earlier in the game, an illegal pitch was called that made a huge impact on the outcome as the pitch was called a ball and the Greeneville runner was sent to first. This game had it all, controversy, engaged fans, great plays and more.
