The 2024 Cumberland Gap Panthers are in full rebuild mode as a new coach and a new system has been installed. Former CHS assistant coach Nick Nash is the newest coach to take the lead at a school rich in football tradition. As with every team, quarterback play is key. The Panthers will bring Noah Meyer to the position with Allen Brooks playing the position some as well. Brooks played well last season at quarterback and Nash wanted his big play ability to be spread around so it’s conceivable that Brooks will line up at wideout, tight end and running back.
Landon Eldridge, Jaden Pearman and Hunter Sturgill will be expected to have significant time at the running back position. The wideouts will be Hunter Gibson, Benson Hensley, Jacob Jordan and Hunter Wilhoit and the tight end spot will feature two great athletes Erik McCorkel and Brooks. Line play is paramount to a good offense and the linemen will include Caleb Irvin, John Mac Owens, Logan Barmann, Lucas Heck, Jacob Claggett and others.
Defensively, the Panthers will add Tyler Medley, Tevarion (TJ) Jones, Daltyn Smith, Maric Russell and others to solidify the defensive line. Backing up the DL will be inside linebackers Eldridge and Pearman while the outside backers will be Curtis Hunley and Brooks. The safeties will be primarily Gibson and Hensley with Jordan, Hensley, Meyer solidifying the corners.
The offensive system will be new featuring a pistol formation with run and shoot as a first resort. The plan is to use quickness to get playmakers in the right spot for big plays.
Nash wants his defense to play fast and aggressive. The Panthers “D” will utilize a base 3-4 defense primarily, but the scheme allows them to shift fronts seamlessly.
Aiden Peters will be the punter and Jacob Jordan will serve as kicker.
Nash was asked to describe his team, and he said this, “Man, we are young, but I just love this team. They have so much passion and grit and will fight and scratch for wins. The first thing I told them is we have to change the culture, and it doesn’t happen overnight. A successful season will be using constant effort no matter winning or losing. Changing our mindset will fix our wins and losses over time. We need to find out who we are as a team and go from there.”
When asked what he wanted Panther Nation to know about this team he added, “I just want our fans to support the kids no matter what, even if all looks like gloom and doom. This team will respond to every situation and get better. So, keep supporting them.”
