September 11- Tazewell Timberwolves met the Cumberland Gap Panthers in middle school football. The two teams traded drives to start the game. On the Panthers’ second drive, Ben Collins and Zack Bowen began doing the groundwork, and the drive continued into the second quarter scoreless.
An apparent Panther touchdown was called back for holding. On the next play, the Panthers fumbled; however, the Timberwolves went four and out on offense. The Panthers began their next drive with a penalty. After a great gain down the Timberwolves sideline, the Panthers had a delay of game penalty at a key down, forcing them to punt. Tazewell started their next drive near the 50. Offsides were called against the Panthers, and the next play, Trevaur Taylor, found the edge and scored. The conversion was good, and Tazewell led 8-0.
The ensuing kickoff bounced off a Panther, and Tazewell fell on it. The Timberwolves’ Taylor hit Jacob Goodin for another first down and was already deep into Panther territory. The next play was a Timberwolves touchdown courtesy of a Taylor QB keeper. The conversion was run in by Goodin, making the score 16-0. Goodin then scored on defense, and the Timberwolves’ lead was now 22-0 after a failed conversion try.
The Timberwolves defense then forced the Panthers over on downs and with 13.3 seconds left, put the offense back out on the field. They tried a quick pass into the endzone that was incomplete and then called a timeout with 6.3 left. The Timberwolves ran one last play before the first half ended, 22-0.
Coming out of the break, Taylor found the edge again and went the distance, but the conversion failed, 28-0. The Panthers tried attacking the middle on their next drive, but the Timberwolves defense countered and forced a third and six. On a fourth and four, Colby Gilbert got a sack and ended the threat.
The Timberwolves failed to gain yardage on their next drive, ending with a turnover on downs. The Panthers’ offense struggled and was faced with a fourth and 15. Another sack resulted in a turnover on downs back to Tazewell leading 28-0 as the third quarter was ending.
A Taylor to Goodin pass out of the wildcat formation, set Tazewell up deep into Panther territory, and a penalty by the Panthers allowed a first down and five to the Timberwolves who were once again threatening to score. Tazewell scored two plays later and added a conversion to lead 36-0 with 6:10 remaining in the game.
The Panthers’ Colton Greenwell broke the shutout on a long TD run but the Panthers were penalized for the celebration. Zack Bowen scored untouched on the conversion attempt, making the scoreboard read 36-8 with less than a minute left. On the kickoff, the Panthers went for and completed an onside kick. The Panther offense had two downs, but we’re not able to put another score up on the board, and the game ended in a Tazewell victory 36-8.
