August 28- Cumberland Gap High School fought through an early deficit, a late first-half swing, and a disputed third-quarter ruling to leave Thomas Walker with a 30-21 victory Friday night.
The Panthers won the coin toss and deferred, opening on defense. Thomas Walker needed only one long conversion to strike first, punching in a touchdown at the 9:25 mark of the opening quarter. The extra point made it 7-0.
Hunter Ellison answered with a solid kickoff return to the Cumberland Gap 42, and Noah Meyer followed with a strong carry. On fourth-and-2, Gabe Daniels found a seam and raced in for the Panthers’ first score at 6:46. The PAT sailed wide, leaving the deficit at 7-6. Logan Meyer picked off a pass later in the quarter, but the offense stalled and turned the ball over on downs.
Early in the second quarter the Panthers forced a punt, only to have a bad snap force one of their own and hand the Pioneers short field. Cumberland Gap quickly recovered a fumble to regain possession. Noah Meyer converted a critical fourth down, setting up Daniels’ receiving touchdown at 3:30. The two-point try failed, but the Panthers still led 12-7.
Thomas Walker refused to go quietly. A late pass that became a fumble was recovered by the Pioneers and turned into a big gain. They scored at 0:41, the PAT missed, and suddenly led 13-12. An interception ended Cumberland Gap’s final first-half drive.
The second half belonged to the visitors. Noah Meyer opened the third quarter with a roughly 25-yard strike to Colson Nash. Curtis Hunley finished the drive with a rushing touchdown at 9:40, and Meyer’s two-point conversion stretched the lead to 20-13. After forcing a three-and-out, Meyer scrambled for yet another fourth-down conversion.
Drama arrived at 1:28 when a Panthers fumble rolled into the end zone and was initially ruled a touchdown. Officials reversed the call, ruling the ball carrier had lost control before crossing the goal line—fumbles cannot be advanced for a score. Cumberland Gap’s response was immediate: a safety that made it 22-13. Hunley added a 15-yard burst in the final half-minute after the free kick.
Daniels capped his night with another rushing touchdown at 11:20 of the fourth quarter. The two-point conversion pushed the margin to 30-13. Thomas Walker answered with a touchdown and successful two-point try at 8:22, trimming the deficit to 30-21, then recovered the onside kick. But the Pioneers turned the ball over on downs at 6:20.
From there the Panthers stayed disciplined, marching methodically and draining the clock to seal the 30-21 win.
Cumberland Gap returns home next week to host Cosby at 7 p.m.
