December 9- Day three of the Claiborne County junior varsity basketball tournament presented by Hearthside Bank featured the semifinal rounds.
The first game was on the girl’s side of the bracket with the Lady Owls of Springdale and the Lady Blue Devils from Soldier’s Memorial. The Lady Blue Devils finished the first period with a 5-0 lead. During the second period the Lady Owls looked rattled and it showed on the scoreboard. SMMS led at halftime, 22-2. Kailyn Williams from Midway and Prima Dance Studio performed during the halftime break. The Lady Blue Devils were on cruise control and kept scoring the basketball. After three periods, the score was 30-4 and when the final buzzer had sounded SMMS had reached the championship game by defeating Springdale, 34-8. Leading the Lady Blue Devils was Emma Ferguson with 17, CJ Hatfield had 10, Tayleigh Stansberry had three and Kaylee Goins along with Jaylynn Books had two. Kinsley Hayes had six for Springdale and Olivia Rose had two.
H.Y. Livesay and Springdale tipped it off on the boy’s side of the bracket with the winner moving into the championship game. Livesay jumped ahead 4-2 by the end of one period. Springdale tied the game and then went ahead, 6-4. Livesay stormed ahead by three in response and led at the half, 12-9. Coming out of the break, the two teams played evenly with the period ending 17-14 in favor of Livesay. The final period was back and forth with the two teams ending regulation in a tie at 25. The Owls did just enough in the overtime period to win by the final score of 32-30. Leading Springdale in scoring was Blake Gilbert with 12, Will Compton dropped in eight, Robbie Wilmoth had six, Xavier Nickell dropped in four and Emery Kieter rounded out the scoring with two points. Jacob Tinnel led HY with 16, Koalton Cupp had 12 and Noah Fultz had two.
The next game was a JV girls’ game with Powell Valley versus H.Y. Livesay. On the line was a trip to the championship game Saturday. The Lady Eagles ran off to an 8-2 advantage. Powell Valley struggled to find the basket and after the first period of play HY led 10-2. During the second period, the Lady Indians played better but Livesay stayed out front. The score at the half was 18-4. Livesay continued playing hard as did Powell Valley but the Lady Indians were still scoring too slowly. After three periods, Livesay led 29-6. 33-7 was the final score with Livesay moving into the championship game. Leading the Lady Eagles in scoring was Amillya Smith with 10. Allie Owens had nine, Ava Fuson had six, Peyton Owens had five. Natalie Davis and Kinley Collins combined for three. The Lady Indians were led by Gabi Bean with three, Cabella Duverney and Madison Medley both finished with two points.
The final game featured Midway versus Powell Valley. The Indians used the opening period to build an 8-2 lead. Midway lost pace early during the second period and the Indians pushed their advantage out to 10 points, 14-4. The first half ended with Powell Valley leading 18-9. Coming out of halftime, the Indians were a motivated team. They jumped ahead 24-9 and finished the third period leading 26-9. On this night, the Indians were just too strong and won the game and a trip to the championship game by the final score of 34-9. The Indians were led in scoring by Colby Weaver with 16, Korbin Goins had eight, Braden Lane had six and Luke Lloyd finished with four. Midway was led in scoring by Lane Epperson with six and Noah Burke with three.
