The Claiborne County area was shocked to hear that Bulldogs football coach Nathan Medlin was fired as head coach last week. The community banded together and took their frustrations to the school board meeting, September 8.
The topic was on the agenda and when it came up it was clear that a majority of the school board members were not informed ahead of time that Medlin was fired from his duties as coach but not as a teacher. Several board members made it aware that they felt a notification should have been given to them in order to answer the tsunami of questions they received afterward.
Still, person after person spoke up and directed their anger towards the entire board. From former players to a teacher working in another county, all stood up in support of Medlin. Out of the many speakers, not a single one had a bad thing to say on record about Medlin as a coach on or off the field. People didn’t understand but many school board members were actually in Medlin’s corner.
As it turned out only one person had the power to legally reinstate Medlin and although you could hear gasps from the crowd as Dr. Linda Keck suddenly walked out of the room, but it was the director of schools herself that went out in the hallway and typed a message that went out to the school system stating Medlin would be reinstated immediately.
When the announcement was made by the board, the citizens gathered in the multi-purpose room cheered loudly. Medlin was reinstated with the condition that he met with Dr. Keck and CHS personnel in the morning.
After completing the items left on the agenda, the meeting was adjourned.
When asked about what he had went through Medlin said this, “Allen, I’m simply excited to get back to work and help these kids.”
Medlin also added, “I plan on being with the team tomorrow as they travel to Northview but first, I need to have the meeting with Dr. Keck and then move my stuff back up there.”
