Cumberland Gap traveled into Virginia, December 6, to take on The Pioneers of Thomas Walker in four games of basketball action.
The first teams on the court were the JV Girls. The Lady Panthers opened things up quickly and took a 15-5 lead over Thomas Walker to end the first quarter. The Gap built their lead further with a strong defensive performance that they used to lead 35-7 at the end of the first half. The Lady Panthers rolled onto a 59-7 victory over Thomas Walker. Cumberland Gap was led in scoring by Brinkley Hollin with 12 points. Also scoring for the Lady Panthers was Callie Hoskins with 10, Jenna Beth Wilburn with nine, Jayla Bailey with eight, Ashlynn Roberts and Emrey Glover both with five, Hayden Beeler with four, Brynlee Foster with three, Haley Pendleton with two and Gracie Nash rounded out the scoring with one point. Madie Burke led Thomas Walker with all seven points scored.
The next game of the night was a matchup between the JV Boys. Cumberland Gap again came out strong and carried a 17-2 lead after the first quarter. The Panthers led 31-7 at the half and finished Thomas Walker off with a 41-16 victory. Cumberland Gap was led in scoring by Colton Jones with 13 points. Also scoring for the Panthers was Hudson Harris with 12 points, Jacob Surber had four, Kolton Goins and Tanner Hill each had three and Teddy Ingram, Hunter Wilhoit and Austin Michael each had two. Thomas Walker was led by Hunter Norris with seven points.
The Varsity Girls were the next ones to take the court and Cumberland Gap opened the game with a fiery effort on defense that led to numerous Thomas Walker turnovers, but the Lady Panthers shots weren’t falling. Cumberland Gap led 18-6 after the first quarter. The defensive pressure of the Lady Panthers was just as strong during the second quarter but the shots available just wouldn’t fall and Cumberland Gap held a 32-16 lead over The Lady Pioneers at the end of the first half. The Lady Panthers came up with 20 steals during the first half.
Thomas Walker crept within seven points of Cumberland Gap at a score of 32-25 before Brinkley Hollin hit a corner three to give the Lady Panthers their first score of the third quarter at the 4:17 mark. From that point Cumberland Gap finally got their shots to start falling and led 43-23 at the end of the third quarter. In the end Cumberland Gap got the 57-39 victory over Thomas Walker. The Lady Panthers were led in scoring by Emrey Glover with 18 points. Also scoring for Cumberland Gap was Brinkley Hollin with 15 points, Brynlee Foster with eight, Gracie Nash with seven, Callie Hoskins with six and Hayden Beeler with three. Thomas Walker was led by Madi Marcum with 11 points.
The Heartland Real Estate Players of the Game were Emrey Glover and Brinkley Hollin. Congratulations Emrey and Brinkley!
The final game of the night was between the Varsity Boys. The two teams swapped baskets during the first quarter, but Thomas Walker held a 13-10 advantage over Cumberland Gap as the quarter came to an end. Thomas Walker pressed on out to a 32-20 lead at the end of the first half.
Cumberland Gap changed up a few things on defense during the halftime break and after a pair of free throws by Braden Ellison the Panthers had crept back within four and brought the score to 34-30 with 1:52 left in the third quarter. Thomas Walker hit two shots late in the third quarter and held a 38-30 lead as the teams started the fourth quarter.
Thomas Walker got a couple scores, but The Panthers answered with an Ellison three pointer and a pair of free throws from Kaleb Powers the score was 45-40 in favor of The Pioneers with 3:55 left in the game. That score was as close as Cumberland Gap would get as Thomas Walker was able to secure the victory by a score of 56-44. The Panthers were led in scoring by Braden Ellison with 18 points. Also scoring for The Gap was Ethan Powell with eight points, Alex Douglas with seven, Kaleb Powers with six, Noah Yonts with three and Devin Byrd with two.
