Claiborne County Sports Zone, 2022 Claiborne County Sports Hall of Fame Inductee, presented by Michael Brooks of Farm Bureau: Charlie Day

The Claiborne County Sports Hall of Fame presented by Michael Brooks, Farm Bureau announces that Charlie Day is the second member of the CCSZ Hall of Fame.

Michael Brooks made a statement concerning his partnership with the hall of fame, “I am excited for the opportunity to be able to support the sports HOF.  I feel like it’s a great idea to get something started bringing recognition to our local athletes of the past.  I think it’s important for our younger, current athletes to be able to see those who came before them and be aware of some of their many outstanding accomplishments and the impacts they have had in our community.”

The late Charlie Day was a star basketball player at Powell Valley High School and graduated in 1956. Many fans and sports historians credit Day as being the very first player ever to dunk a basketball as an Indian. After Powell Valley, he went on to play basketball at Carson Newman and earned his teaching/coaching degree.

Day later returned to Powell Valley High School as the basketball coach in 1962 and later took over the baseball program and was the first ever football coach with the Indians when they started their football team. Day coached all three sports at the same time. He coached at Powell Valley for around eight years in total before changing careers. Sadly, Charlie Day passed away in 2015 at the age of 78.

For all his efforts as a coach and for his imprint on Powell Valley athletes and students, Charlie Day is officially inducted into the Claiborne County Sports Zone, Claiborne County Sports Hall of Fame as presented by Michael Brooks of Farm Bureau.

Thank you, Michael Brooks of Farm Bureau, for presenting this honor in partnership with the Zone.
