Cumberland Gap hosted Union County in the opening round of the 2022-23 TSSAA District 2-AA basketball tournament, February 17. The Lady Patriots jumped ahead in front of a very spirited home crowd. With three minutes showing on the first period clock, the score was 11-5 in favor of the visiting Lady Patriots. Cumberland Gap battled back at the end of the first period behind the efforts of Emrey Glover, Gracie Nash, Callie Hoskins, and Hayden Beeler. The score was 11-9, with the Lady Panthers having some momentum. Union County took the momentum away, and Cumberland Gap was issued a technical foul for an elbow at the 5:20 mark. The Lady Patriots still led the game 26-15. A few empty possessions by Cumberland Gap allowed Union to pull even further away on the scoreboard. The Lady Patriots were being led early by Kelsey Holt. The Gap played hard for the remainder of the half but never made the run they needed. At the halftime break, Cumberland Gap was down 39-21. Holt and Lexi Pressley were still the leading point scorers for the Lady Patriots. Glover led Cumberland Gap at the half with nine.
After the performances of the Gap cheer and dance teams, the two basketball teams were back at it.
Coming out of the locker room, the Lady Panthers defense picked up and then tried to claw back into contention. At the four-minute mark, the Lady Panthers were down 39-26. At this point, Union had drained six three-pointers. Going into the final period, Cumberland Gap was 12 points in the hole at 42-30. Cumberland Gap held ground in the opening portion of the fourth period. Union led 48-34 with just under five remaining in the game, but every time the Lady Panthers got to around 10, the Lady Patriots made a run, but finally Cumberland Gap got the deficit down to seven. The late Panther attack was focused and determined but Union held and grabbed a victory by the final score of 57-51. Missed free throws throughout the game hurt the Lady Panthers more than anything. They shot 18 of 36 from the stripe. Union finished with six threes and finished with 10-20 from the stripe. The Cumberland Gap student section showed up strong.
Leading CGHS in scoring was Gracie Nash with 14 and Emrey Glover with 13. Callie Hoskins had 11 points. Hayden Beeler had six, Brinkley Hollin had four and Jenna Middleton had two.
Union County was led by Kelsey Holt with a game leading 23. Taryn Carter had nine, Alyssa Howard and Mia Sampson both had three and morgan Dyer finished with two points.
The Heartland Real Estate Player of the Game was Gracie Nash. Congratulations Gracie!
