Claiborne battles with Johnson County but falls 29-26

The Bulldogs traveled to Johnson County, October 1, for a district road game against the Longhorns.

The first Claiborne drive ended in a fumble and then Johnson County went for it on a fourth down and failed, giving the ball back to the Bulldogs. On the second Bulldogs drive they were able to run the ball well and got down near the 40 before they too had to turn it over on downs. The Longhorns then hit a long pass play to take a 6-o lead but they missed the extra point.

Claiborne’s third drive saw running back Josh Bolton go 63 yards for the touchdown with 2:13 left in the first. Bolton then added the extra point to lead 7-6. Johnson County started their next drive and ran the ball down into Bulldogs territory and then into the end zone through the air as the first quarter came to an end. They added the two point conversion to lead 14-7.

Claiborne’s fourth drive ended with an interception but the defense picked up a fumble and ran down to the 13 yard line. Three plays later, Landen Wilson found pay dirt and following the point after had it tied at 14. The Bulldogs defense held and gave the ball back to the offense. The next CHS drive began with a pass reception to midfield and a sack one play later. On a fourth and one yard to go the Dogs went for it and Wilson used the hard count for a Longhorns penalty and first down with 1:14 left in the first half. The visiting Bulldogs failed to push it in before the half and the two teams were tied at 14.

After the halftime break, Claiborne went for another onside kick but missed. The Longhorns had to punt and the Dogs began on their own 14 yard line but turned it over to the Longhorns on the 10 yard line. Three plays later, JC scored and hit the point after to lead 21-14.

CHS started their next drive with a penalty and were forced to go for it on fourth down. The drive continued and with another fourth down conversion they moved into the red zone and were faced with a third, fourth down on a drive lasting around seven minutes. James Satkowski caught a pass from Wilson in the end zone but CHS failed on the extra point. The score was 21-20 Longhorns.

The Bulldogs next drive ran out the third quarter and Austin Murrell scored on a run and failed on the two point conversion but finally had the lead again at 26-21.

The Longhorns had the ball with 11:20 in the game and the drive continued with the help of a Bulldogs penalty. They got in the end zone on a one yard run and took the lead back at 29-26 after the conversion.

Claiborne was faced with a fourth down and nine but the Longhorns stopped the Bulldogs and only needed a first down or two to seal the game but the Dogs’ defense forced it over on downs after a failed fake Longhorns punt. The Claiborne offense moved the ball but failed to find the end zone and lost the game 29-26.
