The 2021 Hall of Fame Game was held, November 16 at Claiborne High School. Three games were on the program with the first being the junior varsity boys from Campbell County taking on the junior varsity Bulldogs. These two teams played to a 7-7 tie after one period of play. The Bulldogs went ahead by four to start the second but the Cougars responded and took the lead by three with two minutes remaining in the opening half. The Cougars pulled on away to lead at the half, 20-14. The visiting cougars pulled on away in part due to their press working better then Campbell County got a few easy baskets on the other end. At the end of three, the score was in favor of the Cougars, 37-22. During the final period, Campbell County pulled on out to 47-31 victory despite a late run by Claiborne. Claiborne was led by Brady Hamlin with 10, Hunter Greer had five, Brennan Fugate with four, Ethan Short with four, CJ Cox with three, Jake Smith with three and Evan Thomas with two. Campbell County was led by Cole Miller with 11.
The first varsity game of the night featured the Lady Bulldogs versus the Lady Cougars. Before the game CHS Head Coach Nathan Medlin said this about his team, “I’m really excited to see how they play this first game. It can be good or it can be bad but we’ll see if they are ready. ”
Claiborne had some jitters early and allowed the Lady Cougars get away on the scoreboard 12-1. The Lady Bulldogs had no answer during the opening period and were down 28-5 going into the second. Claiborne hit a few free throws early but were still struggling with scoring points. A three by Hailey Sexton finally lifted the spirits of the home crowd. Hannah Fugate was a fighter down low and put in a hard earned basket to bring the score to 33-14. Jordan Fultz added one point from the free throw line just before the half. At the half Campbell County led 39-17. Sexton led the Lady Bulldogs at the half with six. During the third, the Lady Bulldogs added four more to their total but with 2:39 left in the period were still behind 47-21. The Lady Cougars finished the third leading 47-24. During the final period, Campbell County added to a good night with a comfortable win by the final score of 56-37. Leading the host team in scoring was Hannah Fugate with 11, Allie Jones had nine, Hailey Sexton had eight, Emma Myatt had three, Taylor Pressnell had three, Addie Brooks had two and Jordan Fultz had one. Campbell County was led by Cora Browning with 16.
The final game of the night featured the varsity boys game. The Cougars are now coached by former Cumberland Gap Panthers Head Coach Ernie Mac Clawson and his brother, former H.Y. Livesay Head Coach Brandon Clawson.
Before the game Ernie Mac Clawson spoke about the game, “I think we are in a good place. We learned a lot last season and I think we will compete this season. ”
Bulldogs Head Coach Corey McGinnis spoke about what his Bulldogs needed to do against the Cougars, “I think we are ready but that team is always a good one. They are long and fast and will be a good challenge for us. I think we will have to run any chance we get.”
When the game began, the Bulldogs rolled of to a 6-2 advantage and forced Clawson to get a quick timeout. Claiborne’s defensive effort was creating problems but the Cougars used a similar press to help them grab some turnovers and easy baskets. Around the three minute mark, the visitors held a two point lead. The period ended with the Cougars enjoying an eight point lead at 20-12. Tyler Myatt set the tone for the Bulldogs early during the second period with great play in the paint and from behind the three point line plus stingy defense. Seth Morelock and George Smith played hard and kept the Bulldogs close but at the end of the half Campbell County led 41-23. Myatt led CHS at the half with eight points. At the start of the third period, Claiborne made a run with Levi Peoples, Landen Wilson and Myatt but the Cougars were remaining out front on the scoreboard. The Bulldogs rallied late and had the score down to 10 with under a minute remaining but at the end of three the Cougars led 59-47. Claiborne tried to continue their defensive efforts but they looked to be tired and allowed Campbell County some uncontested shots. The effort remained but the clock ticked away and the Cougars won, 90-59. Leading Claiborne in scoring was Levi Peoples with 24, Landen Wilson had 12, Tyler Myatt had 10, Ethan Cupp had five, Evan Thomas had three, George Smith had three, Brennan Fugate had two and Seth Morelock had one. Nate Walden led the Cougars with 24. Note: neither scoring book matched the other.
