Cumberland Gap Panthers 2021-2022 Basketball Preview

Things are looking good for the Panthers boys basketball team with Coach Ryan Whitaker starting season number two and some talented returning players hitting the hardwood.

Seven Seniors will lead this team including Dylan Ellison, Dillion Green, Aiden Jackson, Elijah Lawson, Lance Owens, Gabriel Peterson and Trace Provins. Look for these young men to anchor the team. Lawson came on strong last season and shot the ball well and he’s just one of the keys to the team’s success. Provins enters the team this season and his size will pay dividends under the rim. Jackson, Ellison and Owens will likely be the ones to get the scoreboard moving.

Jase Daniels and Alex Douglas are the two Juniors and we all remember what kind of mark Douglas can make at the end of games with big shots like the one against Claiborne.

There are eight Sophomores including Michael Boring, Isaac Brown, Hyrum Hinkley, Teddy Ingram, Trent Jenkins, Andy Osborne, Ethan Powell, Kaleb Powers and Noah Yonts.

The Freshman class includes Brayden Fuson, Hudson Harris, Tanner Hill, Tate Murphy, Gavin Owens, Brayden Painter and Cody Weaver. These underclassmen are talented and will keep the program moving forward for several years.

When it comes to expectations and goals for this team Coach Whitaker said this, “Well this year started out with us having to make cuts and I hope it’s a reflection of the interest we are generating about the school and the program. The one thing I should not ever have to coach is effort and if the players let me worry about the X’s and O’s it wouldn’t surprise me if we are hosting a first round game here. Our main goal is to compete and get better.”

Lawson and Peterson both said the same thing about the upcoming season, “Our expectations and goals is to host a first round region tournament game here at home but to definitely stay in the top three of the standings.”

Lance Owens and Dylan Ellison also spoke about working towards their goals, “We are working hard in practice now trying to be the best we can because with a new schedule we have some tough teams.”

When asked to send a message to Panther Nation both added, “We want you to come out and support us. It makes us feel great, it pumps us up.”

Coach Whitaker was also asked to say something to Panther Nation and he said, “These young men are out here working extremely hard trying to put a good product out on the floor so come on out support them and cheer them on.”
