Claiborne County Varsity Basketball Tournament Day 2

 

Day two of the 2021 Claiborne County Varsity Basketball Tournament sponsored by Seibers Custom Drywall and Painting, Valley Mine Service and Fincastle United Methodist Church began with Powell Valley a four seed battling Soldier’s Memorial Middle School the five seed in a girl’s contest. The Lady Blue Devils led 5-2 with 2:00 left in the first period. The scoring slowed as the period ended with SMMS leading 5-3. The Lady Blue Devils stormed ahead during the second period and held a comfortable 13-5 lead at halftime. The Lady Indians rallied back during the third and cut the lead down to eight points at 16-8. SMMS was willing to slow the offense down and let the seconds tick off the fourth period clock but still scored enough to finish with a 23-14 win. The leading scorer for SMMS was Emma Ferguson with 11, Ily Webb had five, CJ Hatfield had three, Jaylyn Brooks and Tayleigh Stansberry completed the total with two each. Powell Valley was led by Zoey Nelson with five, Jazzmine Duverney with three, Brandy Brunscomb with two, Madison Medley had two, Megan Weaver had one as did Melayne Rose.

Game two went to the boys side of the bracket with Midway and Springdale. This one was entertaining from the opening tip. Midway led 12-8 after one period. Springdale found the three point shot during the second period and quickly tied the game at 16. The Owls found the lead at 1:40 and then added to it. They led 12-18 with a minute left before the half. Springdale then led 21-18 at the break. The Owls scored the first five points of the third and pulled out to 25-18. Midway turned the momentum and tied the game at 25 with just over two minutes remaining. Springdale hit a last second shot to finish the third period leading 30-25. The final period belonged to the Owls and they won the game 37-32. Robbie Buchanan scored 17 to lead the Owls, Owen Medlin and Chase Robinette scored seven, Corbin Whitaker had four and Drew Epperson had two. Midway was led by Braeden Bennett with 19, Jeffrey Holt had eight, Kaden Willams had four and Gage Ray had one point.

The third game was Forge Ridge and Midway in the girls side of the bracket. Midway playing with only five players led after one period of play 4-3. Forge Ridge made a rally and by halftime had taken a two point lead at 16-14. The Lady Red Devils tied the game at 16 and then took a two point lead at 18-16. The Dragons circled back around Midway and led 23-20 after three periods of play. The Lady Dragons inched away during the start of the fourth and led 26-20 with 4:35 remaining. The Lady Dragons won the game 32-22. Leading the Lady Dragons in scoring was Graci Barton with 25 points. Kaydence Daniels had five, Macy England had two and Brinley Pendleton finished with one point. For Midway, Jadyn Meyers had 12, Sienna Watson had six, Chloe Holt and Layla Arnwine finished the total with two points each.

The final game of the night was SMMS versus Powell Valley on the boys side of the bracket. This game saw the first basket at 2:16 when SMMS knocked one down. The first period ended 4-0. During the second period, the scoring increased rapidly. SMMS was holding the lead by one at the 1:12 mark but at the half it was the Indians with a two point lead, 14-12. The two teams played as equals and swapped lead most of the third period with Powell Valley leading by one point at 25-24. Powell Valley held off a charging Blue Devils team to escape with a 38-34 victory. Leading the Indians in scoring was Kolton Goins with 20, Braydon Boyd had 12 and Colby Weaver dropped in six. SMMS was led in scoring by Kaden Lovin with 16, Aden Roark had nine, and two others had three each: Eric Ferguson and Kris Ford.
