Claiborne County Varsity Basketball Tournament Semifinals

Day three of the Claiborne County Varsity Basketball Tournament sponsored by Seibers Custom Drywall and Painting, Valley Mine Service and Fincastle United Methodist Church featured the semifinal rounds. Entering the tournament were the number one seeds, both being H.Y. Livesay.

Game one featured a girl’s contest between the H.Y. Livesay Lady Eagles and Soldier’s Memorial Middle School. The Lady Blue Devils defeated Powell Valley in round two. To start the game, Livesay went on an 8-0 run causing the SMMS coaches to opt for a quick timeout. The Lady Eagles rolled on out and led after one period, 17-4. During the second period, the Lady Eagles kept moving the scoreboard and led at the half, 36-8. Nothing changed during the third and fourth periods as Livesay continued their great play and completed the win, 47-9. Leading the Lady Eagles in scoring was Brinkley Hollin with 18, Jenna Middleton and Jaylee Hayes both had 10, Jaelyee Hayes had three as did Jaelynn Jones. Abby Peters had two as did Jayla Bailey. SMMS was led by CJ Hatfield with three and three others had two points: Jaylynn Brooks, Jossilyn Robbins and Emma Ferguson.

The next games featured the Owls of Springdale and the Eagles from H.Y. Livesay. The Owls jumped out to a 5-1 lead and the Eagles got a quick timeout. The period ended with Springdale leading, 5-1. At 1:57 the Eagles took their first lead in part due to some great offensive rebounding. At the half, the Owls had retaken a one point lead at 10-9. The two teams punched and counter punched to start the second half and the lead went back and forth. The third period ended with Springdale leading 16-11. During the final period, Livesay made a mad run but ran out of time and Springdale advanced with a 26-23 victory. Leading Springdale in scoring was Chase Robinette with 12, Owen Medlin had six, Corbin Whitaker had four, Drew Epperson along with Owen Stone had two points. Brady Harris led the Eagles with 15 points. Johnny Wilder had five and Kole Carter had three points.

The next game was a girl’s semifinal game featuring Forge Ridge and Springdale. Springdale and Forge Ridge played back and forth to start this game. At the end of the first period, the Lady Dragons led 11-10. The two teams continued to play the same style and at the 3:51 mark were tied at 15. At the half Springdale took a buzzer beating three pointer that swished the net and gave the Lady Owls a 25-23 lead. Springdale held a lead throughout the third period and finished with a 39-32 lead. 42-37 was the final score after Springdale withstood one last Forge Ridge run. Leading Springdale in scoring was Graci Cupp with 21, Chloe Cupp with 10,Emily Buchanan had four, Hope Cole had three, Jacey Ferguson had two as did Avalynn Cook. Forge Ridge was led by Graci Barton with 27. Macy England had nine and Sophia Smith had a single point.

The final game was Powell Valley versus Forge Ridge. The Dragons charged ahead 12-0 and entered the second period leading 14-2. The second period wasn’t much kinder to the Indians as they struggled to get the offense going. At the half the Dragons held a comfortable lead at 27-6. The lack of a key player due to sickness was really showing for the Indians. Powell Valley came out of the locker room a different looking team but the Dragons lead was still looking large at 13 points with 1:48 left in the third. Going into the final period the score was, 32-16. Forge Ridge held on to win 33-25. Leading the Dragons in the score book was Cole Adams with 15, Colton Jones had nine, Gavin Surber had four, Austin Michael along with Jep Wilkins had two and Gavin Barton scored one point. The Indians were led by Colby Weaver with nine, Gavin Figueroa had six, Hunter Ellison and Luke Lloyd finished with four each and Braden Lane finished the total with two.
