Lady Owls and Dragons win opening round games

The 2021 Claiborne County Varsity Basketball Tournament sponsored by Seibers Custom Drywall and painting, Valley Mine Service and Fincastle United Methodist Church began, December 13 with two games on the schedule.

It was ladies first as Clairfield and Springdale tipped off. Springdale entered as the two seed and Clairfield as the seven seed. Springdale started the scoring and quickly ran the scoreboard out to 18-2 after one period of play. With a 16 point lead, the Lady Owls went to the bench to gain more game experience and depth. Springdale moved on out and led at the half, 28-6. The Lady Owls moved on ahead 36-6 during the third. It was more of the same during the final period and Springdale completed the victory by the final score of 42-10. Leading Springdale in scoring was Graci Cupp with 14, Chloe Cupp with eight, Avalyn Cook with six, Emily Buchanan with four, Olivia Rowland with four, Jacey Ferguson with four and Maci Short with two.
The Lady Eagles were led in scoring by Olivia Ulrich with six, Aaliah Ballard with two and Kalysa Henderson also with two.

Game two of the opening night featured Clairfield and Forge Ridge. The Dragons were the two seed and the Eagles were a seven seed coming in. Forge Ridge played fast and scored four quick points but Clairfield swished in two three-pointers to lead 6-4. Clairfield stayed right with the Dragons until late in the period when a basket by Forge Ridge gave them a two point cushion at 9-7. Still, the Dragons couldn’t get away from the Eagles until the mid-point of the second. Forge Ridge pulled out to an eight point lead but Clairfield’s three-pointers kept them close even as the Dragons were scoring more. At the half, the Dragons led 27-10. When the third period began, Clairfield was a tired team and Forge Ridge moved on out to a 33-10 advantage. The Dragons completed the game and won by the final score of 45-10. Leading Forge Ridge in scoring was Colton Jones with 14, Gavin Barton had 11, Cole Adams had eight, Gabriel Daniels had five, Calen Bailey had three Austin Michael had two along with Gavin Surber. Clairfield was led by Bryson Ballard with nine and Andrew Hicks had one point.
