Cumberland Gap varsity falls at Sunbright

Cumberland Gap High School loaded the buses and traveled to Sunbright, January 11. Both the varsity Panthers and Lady Panthers lost their games against the Tigers and Lady Tigers respectively.

Game one of the two varsity games featured the Lady Panthers. Cumberland Gap was hit with 17 points by the Lady Tigers to begin the game. At the half, the score was 29-19 in favor of the Lady Tigers. The Gap’s best period of play was the second where they tied Sunbright 12-12: however, Sunbright moved on out to win 49-34 in what was actually a closer game than the score indicated. The Lady Tigers were led by C. Newport and her 22 points. Kylie Fultz led the Lady Panthers with eight, Abbie Fultz had seven, Hayden Beeler had six, Emrey Glover and Gracie Nash both had four points, Jaden Brock had three and the total was completed by Ashlynn Roberts with two.

The Panthers took the floor next, and they struggled as well despite leading 18-11 at the half. It was a 20-7 fourth period with some questionable calls, some fans might say, that extinguished the Panthers hopes of a win. Hyrum Hinkley led Cumberland Gap in scoring with 11, Lance Owens had eight, Trace Provins had six, Gavin Owens had five, Kaleb Powers had three, Aiden Jackson had two and Elijah Lawson also finished with two.

The much-anticipated rematch with Claiborne High has been rescheduled for February 4th and will be held at Claiborne High.
