Claiborne High School hosted Union County in one last regular season wrestling match and to celebrate their senior team members, February 1.
Trace Davis and Dalton long both won their matches by forfeit, Austin Murrell lost in the third period, Landen Poore, Justin Robinson, and Cole jones lost by pin. RJ Robinson and Emma Hoskins both won by pin. Coach Walker offered this comment about the match, “It wasn’t a great night for us, we had limited practice leading up to the match due to Covid.”
Walker also spoke about the amazing season the first-year team had, “I am super proud of the kids this season and excited to see how they have progressed and grown as a wrestling team. We have been undermanned in the number of wrestlers we have on the team and unable to fill all weight classes, but we still were always in the match and always tried to control the controllable things such as how we execute and perform.”
Walker added, “Even though we had super low numbers and battled sickness and injuries we were able to win three of our matches this year as team (1st in school history as a team) and we want to say a special thanks to The Zone for helping get our kids the recognition they need and deserve and build the community up to be excited for this sport. I also want to thank our match sponsors: Whitaker Insurance, First Century Bank, and Claiborne Medical Center for helping with the expenses that occur on match day. We also want to thank anyone else who helped out with donations and time.”
Moving forward, the team is looking to get some more equipment for the kids and new headgear for next season as well as a set of travel gear. The boys continue their wrestling individually at Halls, February 12, to see if they can advance to sections. The girls will wrestle at Alcoa February 18.
“Thanks to everyone again and hopefully we can pack the bleachers next year with more home matches,” Coach Walker. -AE
