Claiborne basketball versus Union: Lady Bulldogs rally to win, Bulldogs scored 73 but lost

Claiborne High School took its basketball teams to rival Union County, November 29.

     The Lady Bulldogs varsity team got down 14-6 during the opening period. They were down 32-23 at the half. Hannah Fugate along with Genesis Bailey,  Allie Jones, Emma Myatt, Ily Bussell and Taylor Pressnell all recorded first half scores. After the halftime break the Bulldogs were determined to win the game. They won the third period 20-7 in part due to the scoring efforts of Jones and Pressnell. Claiborne had stormed back to take the lead at 43-39 going into the final period. Claiborne outscored Union 18-13 during the final period and at the final buzzer had won the game 61-52. 

The Lady Bulldogs were led in scoring by Jones with 17, Fugate with 16 and Pressnell with 15 points. Emma Myatt had five points but was a force on the boards. Bailey and Bussell finished with four points.  Union was led in scoring by Lexi Pressnell with 18, Kelsey Holt with 15 and Taryn Carter with 12.

The Heartland Real Estate Players of the Game were Jones, Fugate and Pressnell.  Congratulations Allie, Hannah and Taylor!

The Bulldogs offense was on fire during the boys game against Union County.  As a team, the Bulldogs dropped 73 points, enough to win most games but tonight the Patriots scored 96.

The scoring pace was quick in the first period as Tyler Myatt, Ethan Cupp and Brady Hamlin combined for 22 points. The game was tied at 22 after one period of play. The Patriots outscored the Bulldogs 24-19 during the second period to lead 46-41 at the half. Ethan Short and Brennan Fugate added thier name to the scoring book during the second period. The home team took momentum from the home crowd to extend their lead and win the game 96-73. Stephen Thomas added his name in the scoring book during the third period. Overall, Myatt led the Bulldogs in scoring with 32 points. Cupp had 22, Hamlin had eight, Fugate had seven, Thomas and Short finished with two each. Union was led in scoring by Max Richardson with 26, Cole Nease had 22, Ty Edds had 20 and Bryson Merrill had 18.

The Heartland Real Estate Players of the Game were Tyler Myatt and Ethan Cupp.  Congratulations Tyler and Ethan!
