Cumberland Gap hosted Alcoa, January 9, in two games of varsity basketball. The first game featured the Lady Panthers battling the Lady Tornadoes.
The Lady Panthers struck first with a basket down in the paint, but Alcoa answered with eight straight before the first timeout of the game, 8-2. After the timeout, the Lady Tornadoes defense set the tone for the remainder of the period and didn’t allow another basket. Alcoa led 19-2 after one period of play. During the second period, Cumberland Gap responded with a 9-2 run and cut the Alcoa lead in half; however, Alcoa was able to maintain a nice lead at the half at 34-15. Coming out of the break, the Lady Tornadoes’ defense picked up, and the offense followed. With five minutes remaining in the third period, Alcoa held a 30-point advantage. The third period ended with Alcoa leading 57-26. Alcoa remained true to their game plan, and their defense remained active during the final period, helping them secure the victory by the final score of 69-28. Cumberland Gap was led in scoring by Hayden Beeler with six, Callie Hoskins had five, Kerry Dixon had four, Emrey Glover had three, Brynlee Foster and Brinkley Hollin had two each. Jenna Middleton and Jayla Bailey had one point each. Leading Alcoa in scoring was Mak Bremer with 17, Macie Ridge and Karli Hayworth had 13 each. Halle Bailey, Bella Daughtery, Maddie Stewart, and Gwen Carroll also recorded scores.
For her efforts on both ends of the court, Gracie Nash was the Heartland Real Estate Player of the Game. Congratulations, Gracie!
Next on the floor were the varsity boys. Cumberland Gap took the lead off the tip and was handling the Tornadoes’ defense well. With 4:46 left in the first period, Alcoa had grabbed the lead at 8-5. The Tornadoes made a run that allowed them to lead 26-12 after one period. Alcoa pulled away in the second period and led 49-13 with two minutes remaining in the opening half. At the halftime break, the Tornadoes led 55-13. The third period was a fast one, and Alcoa steamed ahead and led after three, 72-19. Cumberland Gap scored eight more points during the final period and Alcoa added eight more. The Tornadoes drove south with an 80-25 victory. Ethan Powell led the Panthers in scoring with six, Andy Osborne had five, Noah Yonts had three as did Devin Byrd. Sam Seals, Kolton Goins, Kaleb Powers and Isaac Brown all had two points. The Tornadoes were led by Jahvin Carter with 18 and Brady Haun had 13. Nine other Alcoa players dropped in points including Jordan Harris, Eli Graf, Moro Ayl, Joseph Carter, Jibriel Koko, Kaelin Griffin, Elijah Cannon, Eli Owens and Jude Green.
