Thomas Walker and Cumberland Gap split varsity wins

Thomas Walker traveled into Cumberland Gap to battle the Panthers on the hardwood, January 16.

The opening game was a junior varsity game between the Lady Panthers and Lady Pioneers. Cumberland Gap ran out to a 16-2 early lead and finished the period leading 18-3. During the second period, it was much of the same. By halftime, the Lady Panthers led by 30 points at 36-6. The Lady Panthers kept scoring in the third period and led 44-8 going into the fourth. Momentum remained on the side of the home team, and the Lady Panthers won the game 54-8.

Leading Cumberland Gap in scoring was Ashlynn Roberts with 15. Jenna Beth Wilburn had 11, Jayla Bailey had 10. Haley Pendleton and Jenna Middleton both had six. Hayden Beeler had four, and Brinkley Hollin had two. Hannah McPherson led Thomas Walker with three. Mckenzie Daniels, Sophie Ellis, and Alliyah Hoskins recorded scores as well.

The next game was the boys’ junior varsity. Cumberland Gap got off to a fast start and led 12-2 after their first big run. The period ended 18-2. The Panther attack continued during the second period, and with 2:03 remaining in the half, they led 29-4. At the half, the score was 31-8. Thomas Walker played well during the third period and stole some momentum from Cumberland Gap; however, the Panthers still led 37-14. The Panthers hit a three to begin the final period and followed it up with two baskets down low. They went on to win the game 47-22. Leading the Panthers in scoring was Kolton Goins with 15, Jacob Surber had 12. Colton Jones had nine, Hudson Harris had four, and three others had two points, including Gavin Bridges, Hunter Wilhoit, and Cody Weaver.  Jake Johnson had one point. Thomas Walker was led by Hunter Norris with 12, Ean Sandifur had six, and Andrew Bigge had four.

Next on the floor was the first of two varsity games. The Lady Panthers dropped in four straight baskets, including a three to lead 9-0. Thomas Walker finally got on the board, but Cumberland Gap was still scoring on almost every opportunity. At the end of the first period, the Lady Panthers enjoyed a 26-3 lead. At the 5:41 mark in the second, Cumberland Gap had built a 30-point lead. The Lady Pioneers played better during the middle and last part of the second. The Cumberland Gap pace slowed a little, and by halftime, the score was 39-16. Cumberland Gap rolled on away and led 59-23 going into the fourth period.  The Lady Panthers won the game comfortably by the final score of 67-23. Leading the Lady Panthers in scoring was Emrey Glover with 11. Kerry Dixon and Brinkley Hollin both had nine, Gracie Nash had seven, Jenna Middleton had seven, Hayden Beeler and Jayla Bailey had six, Brynlee Foster had five, Ashlynn Roberts had four and Jenna Beth Wilburn finished with three. Leading the Lady Pioneers was Madi Marcum with eight. Kalli Woods and Patricia Bigge both had five. Sarah McPherson had three, and Chloe Marcum had two.

The Heartland Real Estate Player of the game was Kerry Dixon.  Congratulations Kerry!

 

The final game of the night featured the varsity boys. The Panthers opened with a basket, and Thomas Walker responded with one of their own. The Pioneers took their first lead at 5-4, but by the end of the first period, the Pioneers led 11-9. They extended their advantage to four points, but the Panthers were hanging tough. With 3:09 left in first half Cumberland Gap led 23-21. Thomas Walker tied the game at 24. A late Pioneer five-point run allowed them to take a lead into halftime, 29-24. Thomas Walker moved out to an 11-point lead early during the third.  Cumberland Gap had shooting woes at the end of the third, but with 58 seconds remaining, the Panthers drew back to within 10 points at 41-31. The Pioneers led 44-32 after the third period ended.  The Panthers would not go away and, with 4:12 remaining in the game, were only down by five at 48-43. With 1:48, the score was 52-46, and a technical foul was called on Cumberland Gap. Thomas Walker hit both free throws and drew another foul seconds later. The Pioneers hit enough of their free throws to extend the lead to 55-46. The Panthers had to foul with less than a minute left, but with 28 seconds left, the outcome was no longer in doubt. The Pioneers left with a 57-49 victory. Leading the Panthers in scoring was Kaleb Powers with 13, Ethan Powell had 11, Noah Yonts had seven, Isaac Brown had six, Alex Douglas and Braden Ellison both had four, Andy Osborne had two and Devin Byrd also had two. Thomas Walker was led in scoring by Cameron Grabeel with 14, Nick Kimberlin and Tanner Epperly both dropped in 11. Aiden Grabeel had seven, Adam Hollandsworth and Blake Will both had six points and Riley McCurry completed the total with two.

The Danny England Motors Player of the Game was Kaleb Powers. Congratulations Kaleb!
