Eagles one step closer to goal of state championship

Brady Harris scored 25 points and had 11 boards during the Livesay versus Harriman sectional basketball game, January 2. The Eagles won by the final score of 50-33 after leading 26-16 at the half.

Kole Carter scored 11 points, Preston Zachery had eight points and six rebounds, Neil Bunch had five points and Keaton Clawson scored one point but had five rebounds.

Coach Smith said this after the game, “We’re peaking at the right time. We’ve completely changed the way we play offensively, and it’s opened things up for us. We played loose and relaxed which is hard to do at this point in the season but for weeks now, I’ve tried to remove the pressure from this group. We usually will have keys to a win written on the dry erase board before each game. The only thing on the board last night was to have fun. Our goal since last June was to play in this game with an opportunity to reach the state final four. Some thought I was crazy for talking about it, but I wanted these kids to know that I truly believed we could get to this point and beyond if we wanted it badly enough.”

Smith added, “I made the decision Thursday afternoon to go to the zone. I had no intentions of staying in it the entire game but loved the flow that we established early. We had played roughly 50 possessions of zone all season and hadn’t practiced it at all. It was a gut decision that worked, and the kids played it well. Riceville is a difficult opponent. They spread you out and put a ton of pressure on you defensively. I’ve watched tape on them throughout the season and they continued to get better which is the sign of well coached team. We’re excited for the challenge. We need our community to make the trip to Harriman Saturday night. Get behind these kids and push us across the finish line.”
