It’s finally time to name The Zone’s Athletes of 2023 as presented by Reece Monument Company. After consulting with several friends of The Zone, the tough decisions were made.
The 2023 Reece Monument Company Female Athlete of 2023 is Cumberland Gap’s Mahala Walker. Walker is a multi-sport athlete for Cumberland Gap who played golf and track. She was one of the first ever Lady Panther discus and shot-put participant but shined on the golf course helping her Lady Panthers team finish third in the region. She qualified for the State Competition and finished in the 34th position for the entire state. Congratulations Mahala for a great year. Runner ups included Cumberland Gap’s Emrey Glover and Claiborne’s Emma Myatt and Allie Jones.
The Reece Monument Company Male Athlete of 2023 award goes to Claiborne’s Eli England. England is a superstar on the tennis court as he completed his third consecutive undefeated regular season. He is a great student and volunteers his time off the court. Congratulations Eli for a great year. The runner up this year is Matthew McCorkel, golf standout at Cumberland Gap. McCorkel finished 12th in the state tournament. Honorable mentions go out to finalists Jace Vincent (CGHS track), Ethan Cupp (CHS basketball) and Tyler Myatt (CHS baseball).
The Zone thanks all who offered suggestions for athletes of 2023. I would also like to thank Reece Monument Company for the great support. Mike Reece was the very person who believed in me and urged me for years to start this website. He has offered advice and provided the initial financial support to get the website going and continues to support us today. Thank you, Mike Reece and Reece Monumnet Company. – AE
