Jack Day joined USAF in May of 1969. After being administrated a test for color blindness Day had two options. Loading cargo planes or parachute rigging. He chose the latter. He went to parachute packing school at Chanute Airbase in Rantoul, Illinois and went to Randolph Air Training Command in San Antonio, Texas.
He married the love of his life, Bridget Fortner, in March 1970 but in May he soon left for Korat Air Base in Thailand where he packed personnel parachutes and drag chutes for F4 fighter jets. Day said this, “I got to talk to Bridget by way of ship in the Pacific one time during my tour.”
He later returned to the states and was stationed at Randolph Air Force Base where he finished his four years. The couple lived off base in Universal City, Texas and Bridget taught school for two years in San Antonio, then the couple returned to Tennessee. Day is also known to many for his service as a USPS driver in Claiborne County.
Jack Day was nominated by his friends on Locust Grove Road. The Zone would like to thank Day for his service and Ron Hall of Jon Smith Subs in Harrogate, Tennessee for providing this special recognition. Photos provided by family.
