Panthers Bounce Back in Thriller at Cosb

September 5th– The Cumberland Gap Panthers rebounded from last week’s tough home loss with a hard-fought 21-14 road win over the Cosby Eagles on Friday night. Behind a resilient defensive front and timely plays from quarterback Kole Carter, the Panthers improved to 2-1 on the season.

The game opened with Cumberland Gap winning the coin toss and deferring to the second half. Early momentum swung in their favor when the Panthers recovered a fumble around the nine-minute mark of the first quarter. However, the offense stalled in the red zone, turning the ball over on downs. Cosby capitalized moments later, striking first at the 6:56 mark with a touchdown and successful extra point to go up 7-0. Cumberland Gap continued to move the ball but suffered another turnover on downs with 3:48 left in the quarter. The defense responded, as Lucas Milner broke through for a key sack at the 2:05 mark to keep the score close.

The Panthers offense found its rhythm in the second quarter. Running back Hunter Sturgill converted a pivotal fourth down to extend a drive, and at 8:57, Carter scrambled into the endzone to tie the game at 7-7. The drive showcased a balanced attack, and the Panthers defense followed by forcing a three-and-out. Special teams provided another spark when Benson Hensley delivered a strong punt return to set up field position at the Cosby 40, though the drive ended on downs. Defensively, Hunter Gibson notched a big sack late in the half, and both teams went to the locker room tied at 7.

Cumberland Gap received the second-half kickoff but failed to convert at midfield. The defense answered with Chandler Bolinger forcing a fumble that Noah Meyer recovered. The turning point came late in the quarter when the Panthers lined up for a field goal attempt that was blocked and returned by Cosby. A roughing-the-kicker penalty nullified the play, and further unsportsmanlike conduct by the Eagles’ sideline advanced the Panthers deep into scoring position. Carter took advantage, scoring on a third-and-goal keeper to give the Panthers a 14-7 lead heading into the final quarter.

Carter struck again in the fourth, this time through the air, connecting with Meyer for a 60-yard touchdown at the 10:21 mark to extend the lead to 21-7. Cosby answered with a touchdown of its own at 5:39, narrowing the gap to 21-14. Cumberland Gap continued to battle mistakes and adversity—overcoming a missed offsides call on fourth-and-long with a clutch completion from Carter to Hensley, then weathering a late interception with another defensive stand. John Mack Owens forced a fumble recovered by Milner with just under three minutes to play, sealing the win. Jaden Pearman’s third-down conversion in the closing minute allowed Carter to take a knee and run out the clock.

With the 21-14 victory, the Panthers showed grit on both sides of the ball, overcoming early miscues to secure their second win of the season. They’ll look to build on the momentum as they travel to Union County High School next week to take on the Patriots (0-3) at 7pm.

For his efforts on offense, including a timely 60-yard touchdown catch, Noah Meyer is this week’s Danny England Motors Offensive Player of the Game.

John Mack Owens and Lucas Milner have been named your Whitaker Insurance co-defensive players of the game for their performances last night including the forced fumble and recovery that helped put the game away for the Panthers.
