CHS AD Craig Ivey gives an update on the State of Bulldogs athetics.
State of the Bulldog Nation Sports
2020-2021 has been a difficult year for everyone but one of the bright spots has been Claiborne High Athletics. Their success will be presented in two parts. As we came back into the school year our golf team led off with an amazing season. Led by Coach of the Year, Scott Payne, Claiborne captured both the District and Region Golf Title. Lucy Shockley, Haley Holt and Ella Compton all three captured All District honors. The team finished their season with 7th place ranking in the state.
Women’s soccer was the next sport up and finished their season with a 9-7 record which placed them in third place in the District. Macie Sumner ended up in second place for all time goals at 81, Courtney Daniels ended up first in the following all time stats: wins, saves and shutouts. Macie Sumner, Mackenzie Cowell and Courtney Dainels all signed with colleges to continue their soccer careers.
Football turned in its best season of all time with a 9-1 record and a Region Championship as well as a playoff berth. Nathan Medlin won Coach of the Year Honors, followed by Storm Livesay and Eli Stone winning All State Distinctions. Several Football players have signed with colleges and they are Storm Livesay at Carson Newman and Dylan Turner at Union College.
The Boys and Girls basketball team are going through a rebuilding process but both young teams showed grit and determination as they played through multiple cancellations and reschedules caused by Covid. We do have an athlete continuing his basketball career, Issac Moyers as he plays at Tusculum College in the 2021-2022 season.
State of the Bulldog Nation Sports (part 2)
As we finished the Winter season, we entered into what would be the most successful Spring Season in Claiborne History. The following sports made an excellent showing in the Spring Season: Baseball, Softball, Boys Soccer, Track and Tennis.
Softball had an amazing season with many firsts according to new coach Justin Cox. The team finished with a 17-18 and a runner up in the Tiny Day Memorial Tournament. The Lady Bulldogs also finished as District Runner ups with their first trip to the Regional Tournament in school history. Our girls also brought home many individual awards as well. The all District team had several Lady Bulldogs on it, 1st Team: Emma Myatt, Gretchen Jones and Lillie Cox the following ladies were recognized as 2nd Team: Hannah Fugate and Maddie Lynch. When tournament time came around the following ladies earned honors as well: Emma Myatt, Gretchen Jones, Hannah Fugate and Lillie Cox. During the season Sophomore hurler Emma Myatt ended up with 218 strike outs and 6 shutouts.
New coach Keith Reynolds led the Boys Soccer team to many firsts. For the first time in school history the Bulldogs had a 10-7 record with a District Runner up honor as well. The boys also had their very first run to the Regional Tournament. The Bulldogs also received many individual awards: Mid Player of the Year Alex Bailey, All District Offensive Rookie of the Year Caden Brown, All 1st Team Trevor Edds, Devin Edds, Isaiah Boyles and TrevinThompson. Coach Reynolds is expecting many great things for the upcoming seasons.
Coach Essary and his Tennis Teams had many firsts as well. For the first time in school history both teams won both the District and Regional Titles. The boys finished with a 7-1 record and the girls finished with a perfect 8-0 record. This was the first District Title since 2008. According to Coach Essary this was the first Regional Title for the school. The team had many standout performances this season first with the Freshman Phenom Eli England as he qualified for state and won both the Regional and District Singles Title. Eli continued his success by finishing number two player in the state. There were two excellent girls teams, Addie and Emma Brooks who were the District Champions as well as Regional Runner ups. The Lady Bulldogs were also represented by Caryle England and Ily Bussell who were District Runner Ups and also qualified for the Regional Tournament in Greenville. The Boys Double Teams were also represented by District Runner Ups George Smith and Levi Jones.
The track team lead by new coaches Nick Nash and Jake Walker continued to bring success to Claiborne High School. The following students were one of the 24 qualifiers out of 30 teams that qualified for sectionals in the East side of the state.
Emma Hoskins- 100 Meter, Emma Hoskins- 200 Meter, Storm Livesay 200 Meter, Jordan Fultz- 400 Meter, Daniel Eversole- 400 Meter, Cole Jones and Brody Couch- 110 Hurdles, Chloe Hatfield-100 Hurdles, Nevah Cobb- Shotput, Nevah Cobb and Dalton Long- Discus, Megan Yeary- Long Jump, Dalton Long and Emma Hoskins took their talents to Murfreesboro to represent the Bulldogs. Dalton finished 15th in the Discus while Emma Hoskins finished 15th in the 200 Meter.
Baseball led by Dr. Stephen Foster continued their winning ways and hosting a satellite game victory over Cumberland Gap. The baseball program. The Bulldogs brought home many awards and accolades: Pitcher of the Year- Sunny Smith, Offensive Player of the Year- Tyler Myatt, All District 1st Team: Tyler Myatt, Sunny Smith, Chase Foster and Dylan Foster.
All District 2nd Team: Challen Massengill, Joe Houser.
Wesley Brooks was also honored as all tournament team.
