The 2022 Claiborne County Varsity Basketball Tournament hosted by Powell Valley began, December 12, at Cumberland Gap High School.
The opening game of day one featured Midway versus Powell Valley girls. The two teams played as equals during the opening period and after one period of play the score was tied 2-2. An 11-6 Lady Indians second period run gave them the lead at the half, 13-8. During the third period Powell Valley outscored the lady Red Devils 5-3 and led the game going into the final period, 18-11. Midway outscored Powell Valley 4-3 during the fourth period but it wasn’t enough, and the Lady Indians won 21-15. Leading Powell Valley was Megan Weaver with 17, Annah Bean and Cabella Duverney both scored two points. Jadyn Meyers led Midway with six points, Gracie Bolden had four, Sienna Watson had four and Chloe Holt had a single point. The Matt Compton State Farm players of the game were Weaver for the Lady Indians and Jadyn Meyers for Midway. Congratulations Megan and Jadyn!
Springdale versus Midway on the boys side of the bracket was the second game. Springdale jumped ahead 6-0 and finished the first period leading 10-2. During the second period Springdale kept filling the basket and at the half led 22-7. During the third period the Owls used the offensive boards to get easy put backs and extended their lead out to 34-10. Springdale opened the last period up with a three-pointer, but the Red Devils didn’t give up and gave a great effort at the end. The final score was 41-22. Leading the Owls in scoring was Chase Robinette with 16. Owen Medlin had 10, Owen Stone had six, Robby Wilmoth had four and Harrison Whitaker had three. Midway was led by Braeden Bennett with 12. Noah Burke had six, Lane Epperson and Brady Rosenbalm both had two each. The Matt Compton State Farm Players of the Game were Chase Robinette for Springdale and Braeden Bennett for Midway. The third game went back to the girls bracket with Soldier’s Memorial Middle School versus Clairfield. The Lady Blue Devils scored early and often. SMMS rolled out to a 14-0 advantage and ended the period 20-0. The Lady Eagles struggled to score and were down 33-0 at the half. Clairfield got on the board during the third period, but SMMS was still rolling and led going into the third period, 47-2. The Lady Blue Devils finished strong and won the game 55-4. Leading SMMS in scoring were Emma Ferguson and Hailey Martin both with 12. Leah Sandifur had 10, Lailah Nunn had nine, Tayleigh Stansberry had four, Ily Webb had two, Kaylee Goins had two as did Jalynn Brooks. Clairfield was led by Kalysa Henderson with four. The Matt Compton State Farm Players of the Game were Emma Ferguson and Hailey Martin for SMMS and Kalysa Henderson for Clairfield. Congratulations to all three.
The final game featured the boys of Clairfield versus Forge Ridge. The Dragons made a 10-point run early in the opening period and went on to lead big at the end of the first period 22-0. Clairfield found the basket during the second period but couldn’t keep the pace set by the Dragons. Forge Ridge led at the half 34-4. The Dragons kept scoring during the third period, but Clairfield didn’t quit. At the end of three periods Forge Ridge led 55-6. It was much of the same during the final period and at the final buzzer the Dragons had won the game, 64-8. Leading the Dragons in scoring was Gavin Barton with 16, Gabriel Daniels with 10, Gavin Surber had seven, Cameron Burchett and Jeremiah Surber both had six, Joseph Petty and Holden Surber both had four points. Landon Harris had three. Conner Monday scored all eight for the Eagles. The Matt Compton State Farm Players of the Game were Gavin Barton for the Dragons and Conner Monday for the Eagles. A 2-2 score remained on the scoreboard throughout the opening period. Both teams scored often during the second period and at the half Powell Valley had inched ahead 13-8. During the third period Powell Valley pulled out by18-11.ints but led after three, 18-11. Midway rallied during the final period and were down by only five nearing the three minute mark. The Lady Indians remained ahead and won the game by the final score of 21-
