2022-23 Cumberland Gap Lady Panthers
The Cumberland Gap Lady Panthers basketball team are making final adjustments before the 2022-23 season begins.
The Lady Panthers will benefit greatly from their incoming Freshman class. Coach Beth Evans spoke about being familiar with these players, “We have three Freshman, and they all are coming from Livesay, so they know my system and what to expect. They are all good kids and work really hard. I feel like they will earn some big minutes and they just fit right in with the team.”
When it comes to Sophomores Evans said this, “We have three this year and they are very talented. I wouldn’t say they are behind, but they didn’t get a JV season last year. We’re going to ask a lot from them this year and I think they will work hard for us.”
There are four Juniors on the team, and they are expected to step up, “Two are returning starters and Brynlee is really our leader and where she goes, we will go. She has a lot of basketball IQ. Emrey is our point guard and she’s going to get her points plus she’s a very good defensive player. Gracie Nash is probably our toughest player and if you ask her to do something, she’s going to do it.”
The team has two seniors Haley Pendleton and Kerry Dixon. Kerry is coming back after a year off, so she’s got some work to do but she is definitely going to help us on the boards. Haley is long and I can play her as a three or a four.”
When it comes to offense Coach Evans isn’t going to change from her H.Y. Livesay past, “I have always been a pushing the ball and run coach. We want to have high tempo and run the ball up the floor, but our defense dictates our offense.”
The Lady Panthers defense will be the same. They will press all over the court and force their opponents to make a mistake.
When asked to speak directly to the fans Coach Evans offered this statement, “This team works hard in the gym and off the floor representing our community. It’s really going to be a different style than what you are used to seeing. They know what to expect from me so come on out and watch them.”
The youth addition to this team will be something to watch so be looking for the Lady Panthers to be solid and throw in a few upsets this season. -AE
