Cumberland Gap wins two of four against rival Claiborne

Cumberland Gap High School hosted Claiborne High School for the first meeting between the two schools this season, December 17. The night started out very well for the “Gap” as the junior varsity Lady Panthers got a big win over the Lady Bulldogs, 47-12. Emrey Glover scored 15 and Callie Hoskins scored 12 to lead the team to a victory over their rival. Brynlee Foster dropped in seven, Hayden Beeler had five, Gracie Nash had four, Hayley Pendleton and Ashlynn Roberts both scored two. For the Lady Bulldogs, Carly Hall had six, Ily Bussell had four and Daisy Bailey had two.

During the junior varsity boy’s game, Claiborne came out victorious. The final score was 39-34. Leading Claiborne in scoring was Brady Hamlin with 15, Jake Smith had 12, Evan Thomas had 10 and Josh Bolton had two. Cumberland Gap was led by Braden Painter with 13, Noah Yonts had seven, Ethan Powell and Isaac Brown both had six and Hudson Harris had two.

The varsity Lady Panthers won 49-36. The Lady Panthers were down at the half, 24-21. Emrey Glover lit up the scoreboard with 24 points, Kylie Fultz had 16, Abbie Fultz had six and Gracie Nash had three. Claiborne was led in scoring by Taylor Pressnell with 13, Hannah Fugate had 10, Emma Myatt had eight, Allie Jones scored three and Hailey Sexton finished the total with two points. Claiborne only scored 12 points during the second half and gave up 28 which was the difference in the game.

The final game of the night belonged to the varsity boys. Cumberland Gap was playing shorthanded due to three big injuries. The Panthers were young and, in some part, inexperienced. The Bulldogs had to forget all that and play to win. Claiborne got the rivalry win with a score of 76-39. The Claiborne defense set the tone early and the Panthers struggled to score. At the half, Claiborne led 48-19. The Bulldogs were led to victory by Levi Peoples and his 26 points. Tyler Myatt had 20, Ethan Cupp had 11, Seth Morelock and Zack Bailey both had six, Evan Thomas had five and Landen Wilson had two. Cumberland Gap was led by Lance Owens with 14 and Trace Provins with 10. Gabriel Peterson had four, Andy Osborne and Isaac Brown both had three and the total was completed by Aiden Jackson with two points.                                                      Photos by BP
